All turbos make a kind of whistling sound due to the vanes & air etc. I
have a WRX with a biggish turbo fitted. I can hardly hear it. The wife
has a new Golf Gti & it whistles like a good 'un!!

the best turbo noise ever had to be the ol' sierra cosworth on over-run
though... eeeh, them were the days, when we had proper rallies and proper
rally cars...

I reckon you could improve rallying out of all recognition by winding back
the clock about 20 years.

Or do what a mate of mine suggested - they can carry any spares they want on
the car and spend as long as they want fixing it, but they can ONLY carry
the spares on the car and ONLY the crew (driver and navigator) can work on
it. Probably allow them a full service facility at the end of the day.

And boot the f***ing FIA into touch (or better yet in the 'nads) - spread
the rally GB all over the country again like it was in the old days, so that
England and Scotland get a proper share, and bring back real night stages,
and, and...

's all got so bloody commercialised and crap now that it's seriously not
worth going to any more, and I only live 50 miles from the action. Last
year was the first for ages that ICBA, and AFAIK me BiL who's been on every
one for years and years I don't think bothered either.

I reckon they should dispense with the dressing-up of the cars as road
cars too, either race road cars, or race race cars, but don't dress up
race cars as road cars. Touring Cars is the same, F1 teams seem to
have a habit of being bought by large car manufacturers and while the
people, car and team home base don't change, suddenly it's a "BMW" or
a "Renault" or a "Jaguar". At least some of them have some pedigree
via engine deals.

I even saw a "Porsche 911" at a show that was entered in the
Paris-Dakar, not a Porsche part on it of course, and while it had a
911-alike bodyshell perched on top of it, you'd have to be a total nut
to think it was one.

Car racing TV coverage would be improved by much more in-camera shots
too, driver-eye level or as close as you can get to it ideally.

When I was a wee bit younger (and significantly more stupid with my
money) I owned a Group A spec Sierra Cosworth. Bloody popping, banging,
squealing, screaming roller skate on steroids - as you say a sound of
their own, and probably the most "fun" vehicle I have ever owned.

Ive got a Saab 99 turbo and the turbo on that has a very satisfying
whistle to it
