Right, now the P38 blunderwagon thinks it's getting it's current list of problems fixed it's decided to add to the pile.

Seems one of the cats has broken up and is busy rattling like a skeleton having a **** in a dustbin. Is this a common problem on them or is it a side effect of a more deep routed problem? The other question is am I right in thinking there should be a heatshield between the cat and the floorpan? There looks to be the remains of some studs above it.

Engine runs smooth, no sign of a misfire before anyone asks. :)

Drill a couple of small holes in the case and then screw long self-tapping screws into the case until the rattling stops. The cats will still work perfectly well.

PS Threads about screwing cats may be misconstrued as bestiality.

Only screw hard enough until the rattling stops to avoid damaging the core - ooo er matron.

I'll have a go at that then as a temporary fix. I was more worried that it was a sign of something more horrid, but if they are prone to it I won't worry too much. I've checked the exhaust gas temperatures and they seem nice and even so should be ok. Christmas is a coming so the Rangie needs to be slightly less of a bottomless pit.

The heat shield between the cats and the floor pan are £180 a pair. I plan to use some of this Heat Shield - Aluminised Mat 500mm x 500mm Sq - New !! | eBay
and improvise.
Been meaning to do it a while, but until I made sure that the remaining shield on mine is held up onto the studding and lose stuff removed as it is dangerous and there are too many stories of fires............
I keep a fire extinguisher mounted at knee height against the centre console. ;)
The other option is this stuff:
Nimbus GII Heat Shield 615mm x 600MM | eBay

Good luck.

How much?

Knock up some 3mm Ally plate and attach some of that cheaper matting to it then attach it to the floor with stand offs. I'm not doing any real mileage in it yet till I've sorted some of it's issues out.

Yep, with you on that. I was thinking ally plate too.
