Hi all,

There's a metallic rattle coming from somewhere deep down at the back of the engine bay in my mum's 05 Freelander TD4 manual. It happens at about 2000 revs particularly when cold.

I've been under it but couldn't get near enough to what is making the noise. It sounds like a heat shield to me.

Does anyone know what exactly will be causing the noise and how to get to it? It sends me bonkers whenever I drive it. I can't stand rattles (I obviously drive the wrong brand of car).

I'm not ashamed to admit I've grown quite fond of the Freelander, I sometimes take it over the Discovery or my M135i.

I'm not familiar with the TD4, but if you have access to an inspection pit, you can see over the top of the IRD to the area that you're talking about.

The cat can rattle sometimes. Make sure that all the body heat shields are still fitted to the body and not dropped down onto the exhaust. Also the rear box can peel apart at the top. This allows the peeled section to contact the cubby box floor, making a buzzing type rattle.

Thanks both. I've replaced the rear box and the hangers but the noise didn't alter. I'm pretty sure it's higher up than the cat. I had it on ramps in the drive which is as high as I can get it (so wheels are about 8 inches off the floor)

It's got to be somewhere behind the engine but access is the issue.

It's worth checking the damper pulley for signs of delamination. This is a common TD4 failing and sometimes hard to spot. Look for what appears to be glittery fairy dust around the pulley area. Also check for pipes and wiring catching on brake lines around the bulkhead.
