Check the crank pulley for signs of metal particles

Buy decent one when replacing not a cheap one

the rattle at the front might be a drop link. very easy changed..i would put up photos etc.. but my phone is broken at the moment
hi all got landy in monday for a check over, suprised how many suffer from crank pulley failure so its having new..original make pulley and belts and tensioner as a precaution, odd thing is ..it started to rattle ater a 40m trip , used car today ...super quiet, , could it be the pulley rubber but onlyshows after running a long time as today it did 10 mile today..not a noise

if you look at the bottom pulley when it is dark and shine a torch at it you may see a lot of "fairy" dust if so renew as the they are made in two parts and this is a sign when they are separating or have a look at the protector on the inside of you brake disc these sometimes rot and then you will get a rattle as they are breaking off these are not part of the MOT so you could pull it off if need be

We need those 'stone guards' I think you call them, for the nct here in Ireland as from last year.. My local supplier tried to charge me €105 each!! Got them from Landrover in uk for £45 each! I have a 2002 freelander1.. The guards for the Freelander2 are only £7 each..

do you mean bottom pulley not heard of a crank damper but I am getting old.

It's a damper pulley. The bit that fails is the rubber laminated between the two metal sections. The TD4 seems to suffer from it, however the similarly equipped K series doesn't.

hi..spot on...seems its in 2 parts the metal part that slides on crank..then the outer metal belt pulley..seperating the 2 is a rubber ring..damper..god knows why..when it goes the outer contacts the inner metal and rattles
