Just got back in, when i pulled in i noticed that on idle the fan appeared to be rattling, opened the bonnet nothing apparent.
Turned off, pushed the fan round which did not foul anything, what other bearings or couplings could be the cause ? Water pump ? Viscous unit ? Idler (if there is one). I know the 2.5's rattle but not like this, when warm !

Check crank pulley.

See if you can pull the top of the fan forward or rearward, maybe w/pump bearing

Yes check crank pulley, if keyway breaks you are in trouble. See if bolt is loose?

10 Spen points to those who said it was the crank pulley ! How much........... blimey that bolts stiff, keep trying, time for the blowtorch.

the centre bolt does not have to be loosened to remove the pulley there is a ring of bolts which are no problem to remove

Don't remove crank bolt for any reason, no need to. If you have loosened it, you will have to torque it up as in manual or you will lose oil pump drive.
