When it comes to rangie sports what do you feel is better at towing; the 3.6 tdv8 or 4.2 supercharged? Definitely aware of the economy difference, but lets say i were to hook up 3.5 tonnes on the back and tow up a mountain, which would feel more effortless? And also how would they compare to each other with more common towing conditions such as start stop traffic and longevity in the long run. Im also open to tuning and everything so that could be considered as well. For what its worth, coming from a td5 disco so i could only imagine the difference with either engine would be a revolution but which one does it better? Cheers

Longevity? LR don't do longevity, if it gets you home after you buy it without an electronic fault or turbo failure think yourself one of the blessed. I think that's the one that's a body off job to do any engine work like turbo's
Well having got a few landys with over 250,000k's and one with twice that, that go remarkably well i wouldn't say they don't do longevity... having said that, i have heard turbo jobs require the body off, but also read somewhere that the body isn't actually as hard as you might think to take of if you have a hoist. But realistically, is the tdv8 a good engine or am i better off considering something else?

TdV8 has it's problems as do it seems all modern engines. treat it well and I would guess it's better then the petrol AJ V8.
Wow i knew it would be bad, but 5mpg! Was always thinking diesel but thats just definitely confirmed it!
You wouldn't have any experience towing with a sport would you? (No matter what engine it has)
That is a total guess but the official MPG for the 4.2 is 20 solo and the 5.0 is 19mpg solo. Won't take alot to make that drop.

I think the 5mpg claim was tong in cheek.
MPG will be affected by both diesel and petrol when towing. But I doubt the petrol would be anything like that bad. A 3.5 carb RV8 will manage better than that by a long shot, even when towing...
As for which is best. I suspect you'd hardly notice a busting difference unless you are trying to drag race away from the lights each time. Both engines are more than up to the task. And once at speed all else is equal between them, as they are the same vehicles.
The petrol will still be smoother and more refined. And does make more power and torque.
Was thinking 5mpg must be a bit of exaggeration but even so, the economy wouldn't be great on the petrol... but with those points in mind, i think a test drive is in order to determine which way i go (but more than likely it'll be diesel). Thanks for the input anyway, was just keen to see what people thought they towed like

I tow with my 2004 4.4 petrol FF and get about 16 mpg (and that's not taken from the display). My tin tent is 1900 kg twin axel. Another guy on the same site has a 2004 3.0 diesel - he reckons he gets 19 mpg. I know which engine I prefer! If you're down in to single figures then you're driving like a d**k or you really are going up a mountain with 3.5 ton
The supercharged gives 20 or 19 OFFICIAL solo so you'd be lucky to get that solo real life. Then put a trailer on the back. So am I. Have been towing for years with RR's and always seem to get towing what I do around town. Too many people decry the V8 but if you drive sensitively then they're not that bad.
The 'official' for the SC is better than mine so surely with modern tech it should be reasonable.
Mine would do 25mpg all day long if I locked up the torque converter and sat behind a truck but it would average 19 otherwise. What are you towing to get the same as around town? A low trailer?

Of course I do try to make sure the TC locks up as much as poss, and as for what I tow: a twin axle tin tent. Admittedly if I was 'towing' around town all day long then of course mpg would be low - but who does that? Towing is normally related to a holiday trip which includes dual carriageways and Mway's - hence the better consumption.
