I saw a 90 recently that had the exahust mounted much like a raised air intake, logic being that there was then no exhaust to get ripped off.

The one I saw however had no silencer or CAT, so that would make that an MOT failure? This one was used only offroad so it was not a problem. However, how would you make this setup road legal? Put a CAT and a silencer on it?

I saw one like that at Kirton Lindsey recently. It was home made though I didn't ask where he got the pipe from. It wouldn't be difficult to make one with a silencer in it, It's just a matter of having the gear to bend it with.

you can use flexy pipe to get around the problem of the bends but its whether the cat will fit in where you want it ;)

Do you need both a CAT and a silencer?

The one I saw looked quite good as he had made his air and exhaust pipes look the same. It was just stainless steel pipe he had used.

if it was fitted with a cat from new then yes you need a cat, you will need a silencer of some sort to drop the decibel level otherwise it will fail the mot ;)
