Hi guys, looking for some advice. I've got a 91 ex-RAF defender 90, 2.5 diesel. She runs fantastic but I've got 2 very slight oil leaks underneath that are driving the wife mad with the marks on the blocking. I know I know, all Landies leak. The first one is a clear red oil, and the second is from near the sump, black engine oil.

It's really the red oil I'm wondering about, what is it and where is the resevoir for me to top it up. Guessing it's a leaking gasket and how big a job is it to take it out and re-do it.

red sounds like gearbox oil.
where is coming from is anyones guess, Id start with the drain plug washers and work from there.
you need to really clean it up to see where is coming from.
Stick a litter tray under it at night to stop the oil spots as a temp measure.

Red oil? Sounds like coolant to me. You got a crack around the rim of the header tank or is a pipe loose? Check that it's topped up.

If its gearbox oil it will smell like a mixture of B-O and Cat ****.

For the red ish oil does is have a smell? Red oil without a certain smell is steering so check from head tank all the way to the pump. My steering pump ****es out.

Mark a line on the driveway and make sure you park in the same spot all the time. Then drill two deep holes, one for each oil spot on the driveway. Bingo!

Wynn's engine stop leak. Been told to bung some in the oil and that'll plug up any minor leaks. OK for engine oil, but what about gearbox red oil? Any thoughts guys?

Says on the tin it's compatible with all mineral and synthetic single and multigrade oils. OK, next question is what oil do I use to top up the gearbox, the clear red smelly stuff that is the main drip, and where does it go in?!!!!!!!

The red will be the ATF in the gearbox, find out where it is leaking from before filling as you might want to drain it to seal the leak .
The filler / level plug is on the side of the gearbox and is undone using a square drive (1/2 inch socket drive is perfect). For filling a 500ml gear-oil bottle with tube is perfect, I have had the same couple of bottles for over 25-years and have used them for the gear & transfer boxes on all my LR's in that time. A few years ago I bought a suction gun for doing my wife's Freelander and found it an excellent alternative, cheap to.
