the previous owner had replaced the original stereo (apparently broken) with an aftermarket one (no brand so dont think to good) and the aerial connection is a single female type connection as opposed to the standard aerial plug. can i get an adapter to make it fit?

Yes, should be able to get one from either Maplins or a decent car audio shop. Maybe Halfrauds as a last resort!!
