Not getting very good reception on my radio, have changed aerial to a rubber shortie and now head unit to a decent one.

RDS isn't great, so I'm wondering what's the best type? Wing, roof, windscreen etc..

Any help / suggestions please.

I found the little rubber ones really poor. I fitted just a normal old school chrome telescopic one on to the wing.

If your engine doesn't put out a lot of radio interference then a full size one on the wing is good enough. If there's any any ignition/injector interference you want to get the aerial as far away as possible so a 'stinger' on the roof is the best bet, also gives it more height and means less shielding. Definitely not a stick on windscreen job. I use one of these but only because I've got a seperate DAB unit. http://www.amazon.co.uk/JVC-HAL2-Roof-Mounted-Antenna/dp/B00499C998

I have a rubber one on my roof and with it having a good earth for the screening, I have no problems at all. ;)

I've got a stick on windscreen one.
Hate having an aerials sticking out of body work.
People can snap it off or off roading can bend it or break it.
Especially in kent. Our byeways can have have tree branches scraping down the roof as well as the sides.
Body ones often need a serated bit to dig in to metal which can cause corrosion.

Stick on windscreen ones are amplified. BWM and I think Audi use the window type so whats not to like.
I would not have anything else. I've found in the past finding the windcreen one to be better than a normal one

Just my honest opinion.

Thanks James, I'm going to fit one of these as it seems the best option.
One question though, where's the best place to locate the thing on the screen and where do you recommend connecting the earth lead?

Mine is at the top of the screen behind the rear view mirror.
Earth goes into roof lining and either on to interior light earth(Can cause interferance(but mainly with new cars that have a auto dim timer))
Try and see!!

drill a hole and self tap screw into one of the roof struts.

+1. I got a Chrome telescopic one from halfords. Cheap as chips and bloody big. It works though, I have it mounted on the wing just in front of the windscreen and I can pick up French and Irish radio if need be

Ok at the risk of sounding exeptionally stupid; what's a window stick on Ariel.?! I've never heard of one of these!!! I could be tempted as my reception is nothing short of very poor!! :)

BMW RMA819 INTERNAL GLASS WINDSCREEN MOUNT AERIAL MAST ANTENNA REPLACEMENT RADIO | eBay

This is a cheap one. There are different styles.
I find them to be very good and would not change back now

Ps the BMW is generic they list lots with different makes to sell more.
They are all the same anyway.

You can't complain for that kind of money! :)

No you can't.
I got fed up with rust on a 1968 VW beetle so tried one.
I think they are brill.
and down here in kent the byeways are all over hanging trees and bushes so the aerial won't get damaged on the screen.
I suppose you could fit it in the rear somewhere if you don't mind extending the wires.

We'll all be looking for DAB ones soon!!!!

Good idea, I think I will stick one on my old bug too!!

Wow you've got an old bug too.
My sister used to have a lovely '65 1200 Delux.
I've had loads - I loved them when I was younger but completely impractical now for a self employed plasterer with 5 children!!!!!

I do still have a orange 1970 1200 in one of my lock ups.
I bought it for the wife in 1999 to do up as a present.
Married in 2000
child every two years
Whoops - it's still there
Suprisingly so is the wife.

If they leaked it ruined the hard to get to wing and the front if the heater channel!!!

Off topic now!! Sorry.

Hey good stuff!!

Yeah I've got 70's tax exempt bug. I fully restored her last year and is immaculate - looks stunning in Ruby red with her fine sloping wings finished nicely with Porsche Spider headlamps as well as new chrome including blade bumpers. :) I was going to sell it not too long ago so that I could buy a series, but to my suprised the price of them have shot up so might keep her in the garage a wee bit longer. :) £3.5-£5k is going rate now :)

They're readily available on eBay quite cheaply.
I'll try anything to improve the radio reception I'm getting at present.
Not to be patronising but they stick to the inside of the windscreen then feed the wires back to head unit, it requires a live feed to power the amp and an earth lead as above.

Oops just caught up with further posts.
