impending issue with a mate's gearbox. the box will probably end up getting swapped for a spare, but if anyone knows the make up of 4th gear, would be grateful for diagnostical input. (know its straight thru, but after the causes of symptoms as it will probably get stripped)

the following is an msn conversation after he got home, as the weekend was fulll of kids birthday related stuff and we didnt get into the workshop....

N says: guess you got home ok?
G says: yeah, bizarely, 4th gear has gone quiet again .....
just a fairly low rumble on the overrun and the
occasional rattle when under load
N says: what was yesterdays symptoms?
G says: 4th gear sounded like a series 3 box with a chipped reverse
cog
N says: after driving how long?
G says: (after it chucked it out of gear at 30mph) your house to the
s bend on coach road
N says: ok from your thens? bout 20 mile. went for a **** in the last
mile?
G says: yeah it were fine on the trip over it were on the beer run last
night it went
N says: ah
G says: then pretty much fine going home, although there's a whine /
rumble thats new
N says: and prior to that? no indication of impending problems?
G says: and 4th is stiff again (like it was in wales) none
Nl says: ok
G says: think it can have an oil change and see if any foreign bodies
come out
N says: yeah. wanted the info for lz, gonna ask a few questions as to
make up of box
G says: no worries. would rather hang on for gear box swap until mot
time if it will last that long
N says: ok

i havent driven the disco, but trust what was said during the convo, the box has millers oils equivelent of mtf94 in it, for at least the last 12 months. prior to that i beleive it was atf.

i await the comments........:p

input shaft drives lay shaft which drives 1,2,3,5 and reverse ,4th is the connecting of input shaft to front of mainshaft by the 3rd/4th synchro hub sliding over the dog teeth on input shaft, there is a small taper bearing that supports front of m/s and rear of input ,wear in this bearing can cause misalignment and difficult 4th selection, nothing wrong with atf

fantastic jim, didnt think you'd be the first reply tho :D
any causes as to wear in the taper bearing, or is it just age and use?
how much of a #### is it to change? (box will be on bench)
and do you know the part number of the bearing off the top of yer head?
owt else worth looking out for or changing while in there?

i owe ya a beer already......:D
as an aside, how far from cadwell park are you? will be there in early april, dragging a mates track car down for him ;):beer2:

bearing is ukc8l, but i wouldnt necessarily bank on that been the issue ,is it just 4th gears that noisy ,5 miles

ace. will address the issue when we take it out, he didnt say owt about any other gears being noisy.

on the cadwell side, can you recomend any guest house / b&b type places round your way? there'll be about 8 of us in total involved with track stuff. we have been offered camping on site (which the blokes have no problem with, tis the wimmins!)
i'll pm you the date, as i wanna get you a drink at the least.
