I finally plucked up the courage to cut the hole and change the fuel pump according to canyons excellent write up. Cut away the carpet and foam and found black tar substance as stated in the write up. However, the stiff plastic is nowhere to be found. My car is a 1999 DHSE. I wondered if anyone else has heard of this before. I have attached a picture of the cut so far showing the area. Is this the same as any others (apart from the plastic)?

Did mine a couple of weeks ago and the only bit I can think of is the part near where you have folded the carpet back. There is a hard rubber section which I cut away to allow me to fold the metal flap back.
