I had my D3 for 3 years, and in that time I paid as much on replacement parts, as I paid for the whole vehicle,
so went back to a Freelander. 
Not sure why you brought sliders in as the diff is connected to the engine is connected to the gearbox connected to the transfer box and a straight ish distance between that doesn't change. Why would it need a slider
You can put that to a song if you want

I remember bloke buying new rr 2004/5 then had multiple front diff failures, lr denied it was an issue, then when he looked into it found out about the prop prob, he got it fixed again and sold it, think he lost 30k and said never buy a lr again.
Their loss as hes a rich bunny and I am sure could have been a lifelong customer.
Its a real shame that LR treat their customers as they do sometime, cos most of the peeps that buy new would buy again in a few years. Us poor folks pick up the dregs

I find my FL2 on the whole superior to the FL1 except for a few slight things.
Handling is much better, as performance.
The FL2 is much more civilised at speed, and is better equipped.
There are some things I don't like about the FL2. I find the Haldex locks up far to early, engaging 4WD when pulling away, which results in wind up and noise.
I've not driven the FL2 in snow yet, but my FL1 was miles better in snow than my D3, which to be honest was simply too heavy for good control on the slippery stuff.
The FL1 is my choice for cheap and effective progress in snow, and oddly I'm looking for another, as the wife has decided to sell her VW Eos, in favour of a hardback FL1, so I'm happy with that.
