Hi Everyone,

The large round part pictured below is coming away, can anyone tell me what is function is? I know it is part of the Viscous Coupling. Is it repairable or does coupling need replacing as a whole unit?

As far as I know its a rubber damper for the viscous coupling. Dont know if LR list it as a separate part but there are some folk selling them on ebay stating that it will cure all your VCU problems and wanting a few hundred quid !!!

I think you will find that some folk on here are driving around without it having lost it on off road excursions

Ashcroft Transmissions advertise 150mm dia dampers (1.8 and TD4) for £75. See Ashcroft Transmissions . Hope this helps.

Hi, my one is broke as well, how would you fit a new one, "ie" is it hard or could it be fitted by joe bloggs, thanks

Its a doddle...I would be tempted to replace the carrier bearings while they are off though.

I have a landrover freelander ( diesel ) t reg

I have recently had a new clutch fitted ( 1 week ago )

at the weekend i heard a large knocking noise whilst driving on the M 4
and the car started shaking


it appears that the propshaft has broken - the two discs have come apart and I think i have lost a part on the road- I am no expert so need some advice

is this problem anything to do with the clutch being replaced or is it just a coincidence ?

the AA told me that freelanders are prone to propshaft problems which i find quite alarmimg because if i was doing 70 mph or above i could have been killed

any help or advice would be appreciated

Hello.Do you mean the damper has fallen apart ? DA2352 FREELANDER DAMPER KIT | Freelander 1996>: Major Units | shop | www.lrseries.com | L. R. Series
If so, you need to remove the front+rear propshafts and the vcu,then get the rear prop off so you can get the support bearing off .then you can get the damper off.

You could also trawl through a search in here ,good luck with that.

They will have removed the prop then they whipped out your transmission so have a good poke around and see if there's anything not put back together right.The garage might possibly be at fault.
