Does any one know the correct alignment for the props n a D1 ?

I was laying under mine today getting ****e off that the steering box has starte leaking when I noticed my front prop joints were in an odd alignment.

I can't remember if the yokes on the shaft should be aligned or opposites.

They're supposed to be. If you take the prop off you'll find it will only fit into one spline. I tried mine in every other spline until it got back to where it started - it fell in!!

I'm told the reason is that the shaft not only goes 'Down' it goes slightly sideways.

not true they may wear that way but a new prop will go in any spline front only because of angle 30 degrees or 2 splines from both been in same plane

I always thought the yokes were meant to be aligned or opposite, cant remember ;)
 
well, heres an odd one

im sure i read that the yokes were supposed to be at 45 degrees to eachother.

in have stripped down both my props in past and never scratched my head when aligning them again.

the other week i was fitting an x brake and accidently pulled the prop slider apart under the car.

i scraped the mud away to find the alignment marks and to my suprise the rear prop wanted to be lined up with the yokes in line. odd i thought, but couldnt find any other marks so went with it, and its been fine so far with all types of use.

the other day i was fitting a new greaser to my front prop so decided to ake it off for inspection. i noticed that this one was aligned at 45 degrees, and it was marked in that way too.

that made me scratch my head quite a lot. i can only assume there is a difference because of the lengths of the props, but then why would the rear one NOT be at 45 degrees anyway?

maybe someone can explain...

Probably not the length but the respective angle of each end joint, the length is not important. According to this info,

If the angles are different the phasing will need to be different, its very clever stuff but the math is a bit tough going :eek:
 
rear should be not phased yokes in same plane ,just fromt they are done to take care of greater angular variation

Just been looking at my axle prop while fitting some new mud flaps, the front axle input shaft is not parallel to the transfer output, it sort of points up towards it, this would explain why the yokes are not phased as they would be in a parallel shaft setup.

Its all clever stuff.
 
My rear diff input points upwards aswell cos of the 3" lift.

This is why your supposed to fit that adjustable ball joint to square it up again, but tbh it's alright as it is all round.

But yeah the front is at a much greater angle!

No! - The prop had no reference marks, hence the task of trying each spline, the splines are coated with a black substance 'Teflon'??. There was no wear on the splines and anyway a well lubricated spline won't wear. This vehicle has only done 83,000 miles and the props are greased every 6,000 miles. And oh by the way I'm a fully quallified mechanic.

no lr prop has reference marks,they are rilsan coated,the splines expand underneath coating making them harder to slide so often will only go back from same orientation,try a new one,unless you no correct phasing yokes should be in same plane defenders didnt used to have phasing ,lots of props i see even new sometimes are incorrectly aligned,and by the way so am i
 
Both my disco props have alignment marks stamped in.

I'm pretty sure they are original and think they are hardy spicers...
