Windscreen went in today after what i think was a stone was thrown up by a passing truck, although i was also driving past a golf course at the time so I'll never know what it was!

Happened in a split second and the noise certainly got my attention. Anyway replacement screen being put in on Thursday morning by Autoglass and its costing me my excess of £125 to get it done.

Quite ironic that I'm getting a new heated windscreen.......the same heated windscreen which is currently disconnected because of a wiring fault draining my battery! :doh:
 
Have a multimeter with you and check the heating elements before they cut your old screen out. Heard a few stories of these screens being faulty from the factory.

Set the meter to around 2K Ohms and put the probes across each pair of terminals, it should read a few ohms, or if your meter has a continuity setting with a buzzer, use that setting and you should get a buzz. No reading or no buzz = open circuit elements = NBG:)
 
Cheers but he turned up with the wrong windscreen today so hopefully they will bring the right one tomorrow. He said something about needing a bonded screen.
 
Check carefully that they have refitted the trims at the top of the screen correctly and not just stuck them back with mastic.
 
If your insurer is paying then it will be a fixed price job to the windscreen company and they probably will be making a loss on this one. (The contracts are agreed on an average price) So check that you're getting a Land Rover screen, with the logo, or at least it's had the logo etched off. That way you know you're getting a good quality screen from a decent manufacturer. Don't forget that it's all that's between you and the outside world and a bonded (glued in) screen can contribute 40% of the strength of the front of the body shell.
 
Not having made a windscreen claim before I'm not sure what you get, would Autoglass normally fit OEM replacements or aftermarket stuff?

I don't want to get palmed off with rubbish but not sure what I can insist on either. I'll have to look at my policy wording or is it standard clauses.
 
When you claim through the insurance company for a new windscreen does it defo not effect your NCB?

I have a few chips in my windscreen (Nothing that will fail MOT) but just for future reference ;)
 
GOODFELLA - you won't find anything in your insurance except maybe that you've got to use a certain windscreen company. That's because your insurer has got a contract with them. It's down to you to stand your ground and demand original glass. If it comes to it your insurer will back you but normally the windscreen company gives way because they don't want you to complain about them, these contracts are worth millions and sometimes are renewed annually. Don't take any crap about waiting times for original glass, just phone your local dealer and ask them when they can get a screen. If you've got a tinted screen check that they're re-fitting one of them as well. If in doubt put a piece of white paper on the other side of the glass and see what colour it looks.

SCOTT - if you've got decent fully comp insurance then you should have glass cover. You'll pay a glass excess but it shouldn't affect your no claims bonus. If in doubt phone your insurer.
 
As said previously make sure it's a proper recognised make of screen. I had this prob a few years ago with My Sierra Cosworth (remember the days!) when it took three goes to get a decent one in. The cheap efforts looked ok, but either had some wierd brand name or when you looked through it once fitted it was like borrowing someones specs - I just couldn't see through it and got a sore head!
 
Right thanks to all of you for all this advice, I'll make sure I'm getting the real deal tomorrow morning and if not I will refuse it. I have got a tinted screen and all of my current glass is Pilkington OptiKool and all windows except the windscreen has the LR logo so i suspect the windscreen may have been replaced before albeit with the same make but no logo.

The mighty sierra cosworth I have had loads of them from the 3 door through to the last generation small turbo escort cosworth I have even had some RS 500's and a real RS500 bttc touring car absolutely amazing what you can do with an old transit van pinto lump lol
 
Thumbs up for Autoglass - all went well today and they brought a Pilkington Optikool tinted screen and have fitted it with no problems......just hope it doesn't leak.

Have they reconnected/checked the heated screen.....lets hope it works as should and without the battery drain!
 
No but I will put the relays and fuses back in tomorrow to see if it works, only a small chance i know so fingers crossed.

Autoglass did a good job but I could have punched the b*****d because he noticed i have a damp drivers footwell....aarrgghhh! Where does it end!

So from what i can gather on here it will be O rings orr possibly sunroof drain channels??

The P38 certainly keeps you on your toes..

Most probably "O" rings but check the pollen filter covers and the aircon drains before you launch into doing the "O" rings.
