Hi to all.

I hope someone can help here. Already done a search but not found an answer to my questions.

Yesterday, I did a round trip of 120miles to pick my kids up. Disco has been serviced and was running well. Just as I pulled up outside my home, the steering stopped being powered (and no, I hadn't turned the engine off). I didn't hear any unusual noises so went to have a look.

The serpentine belt was shredded and only half of the width it should have been. Luckily had another one so dropped that in it's place but the steering still didn't have power.

I noticed that the steering pump could be moved by hand. Is this normal?

I also noticed that the pulley does not seem to be in line with the alternator/crank pulleys. Is there some adjustment here or on the belt to line this part up or is the pump knackered?

Up to the point of arriving home, the steering had made no indications of failing. Nothing intermittent, no 'tight' spots, no groans - can these things just go?

I've checked all around and can't see any fluid leaks. The reservoir is full and the contents are clean.

Thanks to all who reply.

if you explain the problem it'll make it easier for people to advise yer.

Sorry didn't see your other post.

No the pump shouldn't be able to move and yes it should be fixed in line with the pulley. someting has obviously snapped or worked loose I'd have a good look at it in the morning when it's light. You may be able to figure out whats gone wrong.

Just a note to say thanks to Redhand for his help.

Turns out you can turn the pump by hand (the new one does and works well).

The one I took off was well and truly FUBAR!
