Hi guys, if this is posted in the wrong section im sorry, im new to this.

Iv got a td5 2004 manual and it drives everyday fine and never misses a beat unless reved over 3500, it runs and starts good and has done 94k.

The problem is that as soon as it revs over 3500rpm it coughs and splutter, its as if someone is turning the ignition key on and off fast if that makes sense, it only ever does this at high reves so basicaly i just keep it below 3000 and its always fine, next year i will be towing a caravan so i need to get it sorted,

Any info or advice much appreciated

Also when its warm in the day it seems a little flat but when cold its much better and turbo seems to have less lag, its strange somedays its better than others, it idles and starts perfect all the time and has no misfires.

Lift pump? Is that the pump in the tank that you get to under the boot carpet? Do you think it could be that? Even thiugh its perfect all day long unless its over 3500rpm ?

D2 pump is not a lift pump..it's a 2 stage high pressure pump... if it fails u'll feel much worst even not start at all(forget about it) ...check if the turbo wastegate arm is not sticking, if EGR still fitted see if the valve is not clogged with muck, replace the air filter, unplug MAF and see how it works without it, clean the MAP sensor... if you dont know what i'm talking about, do a search for RAVE, download one(it's free), then open the workshop manual -engine management-description and u'll find the sensors, and EGR is at emission controll.

also check for oil in the ECU's red plug ...info here www.discovery2.co.uk / Workshop /Injector Harness

and all the pipes involved in this www.discovery2.co.uk / Waste Gate Modulator - Over boosting

enough for now ...anyway the best would be to plug in a tester first

I had this recently, sounds like the same symptoms. I replaced the wastegate modulator after checking the pipes, still had the same problem, checked pipes again to find it was the hose going from the modulator to the intercooler pipe. The metal nipple on the intercooler pipe had sliced the hose right where it connects. Really hard to spot.

Thanks for that guys, just to add, when its in neutral it reves fine, the problem only happens when being driven. I will check these things out over the weekend,

Thanks

Sounds more like overboost than fuel pump. Check wastegate works i.e can be moved and associated pipework. The solenoid and associated wiring that opens the wastegate can also fail.

I rarely rev mine that much even towing 2 horses!!!! I find best power is between 1800 and 3000, although when the engine is hot and the air is cold I have managed 4000 just for the hell of it!

Ok , started to look into this today and the first thing iv done is pull the connector plug off the maf thing nr the airbox, now when i drive it with the plug disconected its like driving a different car, much more nippy, nowhere near as flat and it revs fine so i presume i need a new air maf thingy? Is it ok to drive it with the plug off untill i get a new one? What diff will it make as im not really sure what it does?

Thanks

The MAF is simply to manage the EGR which by the sound of that is still attached and malfunctioning as a result of a bad MAF.

Just run without it. I'd get it replaced eventually but no rush really - get rid of that EGR !!

Make sure you get a genuine one when you do replace. A lot of people have problems with cheaper versions.

Ok update, i got a new maf and its s different car, problem solved, thanks very much to everyone who advised. Much appreciated, cheers.
