I'm looking at s/h Bighorns and Pajeros and the like to replace an elderly
Fourtrak tow-car. Are there any sites which summarise technical details
well? All things being equal, I'd like one of the more powerful diesels as I
have a heavy trailer and I hate holding people up on hills. The "What Car"
site is good for BHP, but doesn't cover the grey imports.

Look at the hp figures for UK Trooper and Shogun with the same engines as
your imports and you have your answer. In either case you will have more
than enough power to pull most loads without holding up traffic. Once you
have over 100hp it is not the amount of extra hp that is important but the
way you use it.
Even the 113hp 3.1 diesel Isuzu flies and the long version I have has no
problem regularly towing 3 tons. Power is seldom the speed limiting factor,
even in hilly West Wales.

and you ought to look at the torque figures as well. They're probably a
better indication of pulling power.

Yup - got to agree with this - we got ourselves a Jap import trooper for
towing horse boxes around. More than capable of towing 2 x 16 hands of
sports horse + trailer (~2.25 tonnes) even on muddy show-grounds.

As the other posters have said it's not just about power - torque & gear
rations have more to do with it when it comes to pulling power.

The import trooper is a 3.0 engine IIRC and has a slightly different
engine layout but most of the details for the UK version are comparable.
If I remember tomorrow I'll dig out the handbook and get you the figures
for the import version.

The 3.0 Trooper has around 158hp compared to the 3.1 at 113hp, both
turbo-intercooler.

Thanks both re: the 3.0 trooper. Unfortunately it is also 6 feet wide which
makes it very tight for my drive; still looking at a couple of 3.1's
