Hi,
Been lurking for a while as I try to pluck up the courage to buy a FL:D the reason I need courage is that all the forums seem to be full of tales of woe and misery:confused:
I have a budget of approx 10k and looking around that should get me an 05/06 TD4 HSE with approx 40k on the clock.
I really need to have a reliable vehicle as I have a daily commute of 70 miles, the question is should I be looking at a different 4x4 or would a freelander be upto the job.

All help appreciated,

Tom

It's a normal problem with forums - they tend to exist to provide support got people with broken vehicles.

I had a FL 2.0DL for near ten years with nothing of any consequence going wrong. I have just changed it for a TD4 and had a few niggles due to a previous owner who had it looked after by a garage that made a few fundamental mistakes.

I love them and if you can do your own maintenance or know people who can do it cheaply then go for it. If you need main dealer support then you need money and potentially lots of it.

Buying low mileage is not always best as there may be things about to go wrong. Bank on spending on a new VCU £300 fitted for piece of mind and a good diagnostic service to start. Service history is essential although not always a sign it's been done properly.

Buy cheaply by going to independant dealers not main one and get a warranty if you can.

If you like them as much as I do then you will put up with the odd thing here and there.

im not going to crack any wize comments ( not yet anyway ) theres a search function on here do one your find alot of useful info there ........ before someone asks if you got a pair of curling tongs in the boot :D:D

I am more than happy to cut your hair;) I will even do it for free, Lionel Blair cut anyone:eek:

I have done some searches and that is what is scarey:doh:

They are not all bad, we are on our 3rd Freelander 1 and all have been very reliable, our current TD4 needed a new fuel pump but that has been all. Even my 12 year old 1.8 has been reliable once the servicing and maintenance were brought up to date.

Get a good one and it will serve you well.

Angeloc is right, not many people get in their car, start it up, drive to work and return home to go online and let people know there were no problems!

Thanks for all the quick replies I appreciate them.
Well it seems the general consensus is stop messing around and buy one:)
I have an HSE in my sights that I will look at tomorrow and hopefully will offered a sensible px price and be able to do the deal, then the modding can begin:D
Hope to be back with pics real soon.

Tom

I've got a daily commute of around 90miles plus another 240miles most weekends and have had no mechanical problems at all. The only problem I've had was with the n/s wing mirror - replaced it and job done!!!

I've had the car about 18months and she's still going strong - no doubt that now I've said that, she's gonna die on me

For the sort of money you should have full service history from a main dealer.

Read it carefully

As with all the Land Rovers I have bought in the past most of the cheaper older ones have been poorly maitained.

Check for the service history and look at the car carefully checking all the electrics, dont take any bull from the seller. Check for oil leaks and condition of oil and air filters etc this will give you a clue whether or not it has had a recent service.

The forum is here to help people with problems and unfortunately we dont have a section for how good and reliable they can be.
Service is paramount in any car but if you use the wrong dealer with a Landy you will eventualy find yourself in difficulty. There are so many aftermarket parts available some of which cause problems as the Range Rover Classic guys will tell you. Look for ex Landrover service engineers with the latest test gear, if the guy is enthusiastic he is most likely to do the job better. Car dealers dealing in local all makes of car have not been any good for me so far and I have ended up taking it back to my independant Landy dealer.
If the garage has predominantly Landys in for repair when you visit then he is more likely to know what he is doing.

That said you have quite a budget so it would be worth looking at your Local Landrover dealer and asking he if he can find you something from the dealer network.

Take someone with you that has a Landy when you view

Ger it checked by RAC or similar if you are paying that sort of money

If in doubt ask on the forum again before you part with any cash and remember most warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on.

Lastly LandyZone is short for **** Takers

Good Luck and let us know what you get
