I was driving home from work today and it became very difficult to move the stick to where it should go. I had to use brute force to get it into the correct gear at each gear change.

Anyone any ideas what I should be looking for here?

Is it a gearbox problem or perhaps a clutch problem?

Any advice gratefully accepted.

Its a 2006 TD4 2 litre.

I would check out the gear linkage first

Had that problem with another car and that was the cause

No idea when the gearbox oil was last changed. I have owned it for about 20 months.

Could lack of oil / dirty oil cause that problem?

Just been out to the car and played with the gear stick, without engine running and now it has cooled down and it is as smooth as a baby's bum.

Does that give any further clues?

I am leaning toward it getting overheated as I was pushing it and I have no idea when the gearbox oil was last changed or even checked, but I am no mechanic and only work from the manual.

Could be somthing as simple as master cylinder on its way.............does it feel like you have to push the clutch pedal through the floor to change Gear?.........if so try bleeding the clutch system.

I can't say that the clutch pedal feels any different to be honest.

I will try bleeding it and if that fails then get a new master cylinder.

I shall also look at changing the gearbox oil within the next couple of weeks when I have the time.

Gear box oil level, definitely needs checking /topping or oil changing!
Also as above clutch, may be dragging a tad could need bleeding to ensure you get the full throw to disengage while changing gear.

fact that you can select now its cooled shows selector / linkage are ok, so check above before serious damage occurs.

my wife had that problem turned out to be the clutch slave cylinder but that was on a 1800 petrol but do like the other have suggested check the linkage might just need a bit of tlc with grease

My landy has only done around 40k, so not excessive for a 2006 model.

Can I check what oil I am going to have to get.

I assume break fluid dot 4 for the master cylinder.

What oil for the gearbox bearing in mind I am probably going to have to get it from Halfords on Sunday (nothing else open except supermarkets) as I want to get this done as soon as possible just in case this doesn't fix it so I have time on my side.

Can I check what oil I am going to have to get

mtf 94 .. ( google that and check the specifications )

not sure what oil at halfords would be the equivalent ..
but mtf 94 is an 'api gl-4' spec oil ..

maybe get underneath the vehicle 'n check that nothing is jamming up the linkage
( might be full of crud ) .. just speculating :)

i've had one or two times when selecting gears doesn't happen the first time
usualy when the vehicle is at a sideways angle .. 1st and reverse for some reason
.. for reverse .. if that happens .. i need to re-select another gear .. then shift it back into reverse .. .. only happens when the vehicle is tipped sideways slightly .. and pointed downhill .. .. 1st was hard to select a few times when the n.s. wheels were up on a curb. .. .. don't always happen just now and again ..

~~~~~~~~
06' td4 .. 58k on the clock .. 'n i doubt that the g.box oil has been changed ..
( had 37k on the clock when i bought it ) ..
although the g.box oil-level has been checked ..
Yes, I will have a good look when I can get under it.
Looks like the nearest place to get Texaco MTF 94 is 20 miles away, so will have to try and get there somehow.
I will do the clutch cylinder bleed with new fluid first and see what happens and if that fixes it, I will still do the gearbox oil change but at my leisure in the next few weeks.
I am struggling to locate the slave cylinder. Can someone direct me to where it is please?
EDIT ******
Found it.
i did read an article that warned against using a gl5 spec .. where gl4 is specified
i.e. for synchromesh gearboxes ..
something to do with with the fact .. if the oil is too slippery ..
the synchros don't slow down enough when the gear is shifted .. causing hard-to-change shifts ..
i'd make sure any substitute oil is specified as being compatible with the mtf-94 spec.
( be a few alternatives about )
you could check the oil specs for the ones sold at halfords ( website )
on the manufacturers website for the full spec ..
( edit .. as mystery solved .. evidently :)
What diameter hose do I need to bleed the clutch cylinder?
I am out shopping now and have found a 6mm hose but it looks too small to me.
So a GL4 spec oil would be ok for my Landy?
as in ... any GL4 spec ??
mmmm .. i don't know ..
all i can say .. if it were for my td4 .. i'd go looking for mtf-94 ..
( just from what i've read via the internet )
or an oil that includes on the spec label as a definite replacement for mtf-94 and suitable for LR vehicles ..
be a few internet shops that supply mtf-94 .. do a google search ..
( or a replacement that specifies it as such )
or a LR dealership should have it .. i would think ..
better safe than sorry .. as using unsuitable oil can screw up the gearbox ..
When I renew the gear box oil I will make sure that I have the correct stuff from my nearest LR dealer.
