If a maf is failing but not dead yet, can it sometimes be cleaned to improve matters or is it a matter of replacement required when it is failing?

I am aware of the synergy mod.

If cleaning could be the answer in some cases, what bit is cleaned?

the whole of the inside be carefull or you could snap the wire which is the resistor if you can find the value of the resistor then you could just replace it and then it would be back to as new

Just replace it there only peanuts............ Just buy the element though and not the whole unit.

I thought the maf cost over £300 unless you get the cheaper but inferior one?

when i said value of the resistor i did not mean in money i meant in ohm's
