I've been out test driving most of the 4x4's. There are some good deals to be
had right about now with model end year sales and incentives.

We really liked the 2003 Montero Sport we tested. They have a great $4000
incentive till the end of month at which time I'm told the incentive may

1. Change to ????? who knows

2. Stay the same

3. Be gone altogether

Does anyone have any experience with incentives in the Fall compared to the
Summer? Should we go for it now or wait the few weeks to see what happens?

Thanks in Advance

Where it snows, they are always trying to dump 4x4s at the end of
winter.

Incentives, deals, coupons, etc, are all done for one reason - to
boost sales. So when sales are traditionally slow, you'll get a good
deal; and vice versa. So the question is, when are sales slow? When
do buyers NOT come to the dealerships? Generally speaking, Aug and Feb
are best buyer times. For a 4x4 in certain areas of the country, that
may change a little, but not much. And that's because most folks who
are buying a 4x4 SUV never take it off road, and only use it to go to
the grocery store or commute to work. So they generally follow the same
buying patterns as those buying anything else.
So the fact that you're looking at a 4x4 really doesn't matter.
When the new models come out in Sept, the incentives will change.
Expect the deals to drop a bit. But if there are any left over 2003's
on the lot, you can bet the dealer is anxious to get rid of them, and
will probably give you a good deal. And he better, since the vehicle is
now one model year older, and the value of the vehicle has dropped
significantly.
If they vehicle that you really want is on the lot now, buy it
now. Otherwise, wait until Jan/Feb time frame.

Yeah but that is always going on, and is a local market condition
pretty much funded by the dealer.

The incentives are funded by the manufacturer with perhaps added
dealer participation and happen when either the sales stink
[i.e. the past two years] or new models are in the pipeline
and there are still old ones on the lots.

If anyone could really predict the future car market, they would
be a billionaire and not wasting time on newsnet.

For the original poster, if you find a nice SUV that you like,
at a price that looks pretty good, buy it, but plan to keep it
long enough to make up for the 1 year depreciation hit you'll
take instantly. The price *might* be better in the near future
but the vehicle and options you want may or may not be.

Dunno what it is gonna do for car sales, but it looks like
the unbelievably slow recovery that some claim started in january
picked up a bit of [still turtle level] speed in mid July and
in the last coupla weeks of August has picked up yet another
tiny bit. If it gets too good, the incentives on 2003 models
may not be there next spring... if all sell out this fall.
Dunno, sure wish I did.

Well naturally they will go down as the 2004's hit the lots. It never
hurts to wait if you can. It may get harder to find one though.

The only input I can share is that last time I had checked is that the
prices for Mitsubishi Montero parts where hi priced and hard to find. That
may have changed by now. The Nisson Extera (sp?) is probably a better
deal - still built on a truck frame and since it shares some components, may
be cheaper to maintain. But God, they are both awfully small!!!!!!
