Hi folks,

hope everyones well, a little niggle that i need to work out, under the truck today i grabbed hold of the front prop and it has alot of play in it turning wise, not laterally.. whereas the rear prop is stuck solid.. is that right? the handbrake was on during this, i wondering this because when driving there is a slight clunk as the slack is taken up when driving.. are these things linked? Could it be the transfer box front shaft need changing due to wear?

Many thanks in advance,

Edd

if hand brakes on back prop will be locked ,front you have wear in front axle (diff, drivemembers etc)and in transfer box center diff ,you could remove pto cover on transfer box and check input gear and mainshaft splines ,A frame ball joint ,rear diff and drive members

mine has the exact same thing, alot of rotational movenment in the front prop and none in the rear and has the clunk when pulling away, this is down to wear on the input gear and mainshaft not a major problem but will eventually need sorting out

A worn mainshaft will eventually need a replacement gearbox/rebuild to fix, depending on the severity of the wear some people get away with replacing old input gear with a newer cross-drilled one with new splines which will half the backlash.

My gearbox was replaced a month ago due to worn splines but still clunks occasionally or if I'm a bit rough with it due to slack in t/box, front prop is 'clunkier' within the box then the rear when turned by hand (with handbrake off) and still has slightly more play then the rear even after changing a worn drive member.
