I have just about finished fitting my snorkel on my Td5 Defender, but have not fitted the intake to the air intake box.

I purposely did not do it because I have read a number of threads which suggested that the cyclonic effect, caused by the rush of air which is passed through the unit, can carry water into the engine.

Can anyone update me on the latest thinking on this subject? I like the looks of the unit and it's unlikely to ever go paddling, so I haven't any other use for it, it's my idea of bling!

Erm the point of a snorkel is to avoid the very situation you described... Otherwise its just a raised air intake for use in sandy/dusty environments.

If you want to go in water then the snork should be 100% sealed from the top of the intake right through to the airbox and the engine should stall if you cover the intake.

The question that I am looking for an answer to is, Have the issues raised, specifically on the matter of the Plastic jobbie, have been answered.

You may or may not be aware of the number of questions raised about the cyclonic effect caused by the use of this specific Mantec unit.

I do understand why people fit snorkels to their vehicles, but, although I am most unlikely to do any wading, I like the look of this particular unit and that's why I bought one. :)

Do you have a link to the queries regarding the cyclonic effect you are questioning? I have never heard of it.

Cheers

If your not going to go paddling then I wouldn't bother connecting it up. I found when I connected my snorkel I lost a few MPG and the engine didn't seem so free revving as before.I took mine off when I got it resprayed and I haven't bothered putting it back on. I might do if I do another Morocco trip or I might just carry and extra air filter. Also before you go paddling you will need to check the sealing before getting it wet or after you change the air filter.
And if your going to go paddling don't forget the raised axle breathers.

Thanks for that Mike. I did read lots about snorkels and had seen that the engine will loose as small amount of power and that fuel costs might rise, due to the drivers tendency to compensate for the loss of power.

I know it's a boy toy thing, but I particularly like the look of the plastic jobbie, and its not fitted for true benefits which it would bring if I want to go paddling. And, as you also say, I would also need to fit breathers and check other areas.
