Hello!

Fairly new to this so please excuse my ignorance / lack of knowledge.

I'm hopefully going to receive a nice tax return, and then I will hopefully be on the look out for a Disco for green laning and off roading. But I'm not sure on petrol or derv!

Open to suggestions and willing to listen to any advice given.

Thank you

Diesel I would say. Never seen the point in a petrol engine in a 4x4. Personal preference I suppose really

why don't we discuss whether manual and automatic is better too?

Do a search, ultimately it depends what you wanna use it for,
if its just a toy with no water - get a v8,

if its a toy and you like wading - get a v8 and fit a megasquirt system

if you wanna do silly hill climbs - get a V8

if you wanna do miles/towing/play days/laning get a derv

i left it out deliberately cos it makes the derv redundant

derv if you like chips!

Megasquirt?? I do like the sound of a V8 tho.

:pop2: lets dicuss manual v automatic, thats easy, its been done before.:D

I've owned both 3.5 and 3.9 v8's, and 200tdi, 300tdi and now a td5. All in all I feel that the v8's provide more power and pull on more difficult terrain than the diesels and they do sound great but there is always the worry of water, even If you don't wade, in my experience even the best preped v8's are a target for the water, I found the 200tdi's a bit slow bit always worked come water, mud, snow or anything else you can think of and the 300tdi's were pretty much the same with little pain from water, both the v8's and the older diesels are good off road, all relatively simple to work on and not pricey on parts, the only thing I will say is I'm on my 1st td5 and I've had more trouble with thins than any other Landy engine I've had and I havnt even been near water yet :-(, but I guess I could have a bad one maby. Anyway you can't really go wrong as long as it has a Landy badge on it, an I'm not getting involved in the auto manual dispute as I'm very much a manual man.

I too have had V8s both manual and auto can’t fault the V8 other than wading worries , personally I do not like the auto at all and was very glad to get shot of it, I also had a duel fuel V8 horrible vehicle, I know have a disco 200 tdi and what a motor it has not missed a beat in the 3 years I’ve owned it.

For long distance then Derv, for something that will put a smile on your face as soon as you start it then V8. I was going to fit LPG until somebody who has worked on landys all his life convinced me otherwise.

But please stay clear of the MPI Disco

And on the other topic, I have sold 2 auto boxes out of my RRC's and replaced with Manuals.

Thanks for all your comments, very interesting.

I think I will look for a V8, esp after reading what Mainlander said. I will probably look for a 3.5 V8 manual. Auto just doesn't float my boat! Also probably avoid water at all cost! The Megasquirt looks complicated, I'm a proper novice 😉

But thanks to all involved once again 👌

Yea not too sure about LPG either. What's a MPI Disco? I'm going to be looking for a series 1 I think.

MPI discos are ones for people who didn't like Diesel engines and didn't want a V8, so the boffins at land rover fitted a 2.0 petrol engine :what:
