No rest for the wicked I guess.
Last week I replaced my serpentine belt as it was holding by a thread. Did not notice anything wrong w the pulleys though. This morning, while trying to take my 98 D1 for a short drive, I heard a strange noise and lost power steering. Turns out that the PAS pulley has come out of alignment and the belt got loose. The bolts are in place but the shaft of the pulley is moving freely in/out. Is there a way of tightening it or does this mean that the PAS pump has to be replaced?

Don't keep running it, if that pulley/shaft departs the pump body you could be up for a new radiator and numerous other bits.

I would think that the shaft has broken, take the belt tension off and try wobbling the pulley if it wobbles by hand, yes unfortunately the pump shaft is broken and a replacement pump required, not a too big expense from memory.

I didn't feel a wobble, but I can just pull the shaft with my hand in and out some 10cm.

Also, looking at pics of the replacement part on the web, they don't even show the shaft as part of the pump. Could it have just lost a stopper of some sort?

Rotor/vane carrier must have slipped on the shaft, maybe lost its fit on the shaft and sheared a drive key, but not absolutely sure of the contruction of the pump, but rotor must not be turning with the shaft if no power assistance. I would pull it apart to find out if it could be fixed, but that is me, I enjoy a challenge.

Thanks Gazbo,
Normally I would do so too, but the car was scheduled to go in for some other stuff this week (shocks, rear diff etc.) so I guess this will be just one more task for the mechanic.
Only thing is that I will have to have it towed, but hopefully that will be covered by the insurance.
