Good evening everyone. Could some one please advise me as the best way to set up my series 3 swb after fitting new parabolic springs.ie loading so that shackle bolts/plates etc can be tightened, and to what torque.
Thanks Steve.

Do not over torque the shackle bolts. I saw a rigid S2a - cause over tightened shackle bolts.....

Is there a tor

Is there a toque for these as you are saying do not over tighten? I am shortly replacing the springs on mine although I am keeping standard rather than going with para's

I would be very surprised if you could generate enough torque to lock the suspension ridged. The shackles should clamp down onto the center tube of the metalistic bush, I think you would probably strip the threads before you could deform the center of the metalasic sufficiently to lock its movement.

+1 on the above, the bolts are not ment to pivot in bushes. [the tube and bolt would soon wear if this were the case]

seen in real life and on ebay. a s3 with its rear end so high it was silly- rear shackles vertical.
I suggested he undo them for a while....

Suggests that the bolts were done up when the chassis was supported and the axle fully dropped rather than over tightened bolts.

The way I've done mine is I've just nipped them up for now then once the body and everything else is fitted and ran round the block a couple of times to allow the shackles to bed in then I will tighten them up, don' think there is a torque setting for them though :)

jumping on this thread (hello) do you thread the shackle bolt through the bush then torque the bolt up whilst its through the threaded shackle then add the bolt?
Thanks

Rich

There is a torque setting somewhere-- cannot remember where it is-- I have seen them with rigid shackles and springs- really funny.

Yes do up the bolt and then fit the locknut.

Yes they will be. But the poly ones still have a steel tube, I don’t know if you need to treat them different?

Personally I tighten till the flange of the bush is compressed and tube nipped then tighten lock nut , you can feel on the spanner when tight enough. Poly instructions do not ask for vehicle to be preloaded.
Once carried nearly a ton of gear across a mountain track thought I had flattened a spring, changed chassis a couple of years later [2010] refitted same springs still sitting level now can only assume excess load moved it in poly bush and it held down.

Poly bushes work by allowing the center tube to rotate in the polymer sleeve, if you dont do the shackles up tight there may be a tendency for the bolt to rotate in the sleeve and both will wear and also if the shackle bolts are not tight the spring location at the rear can be compromised.

Many thanks for the advice. Ive nipped up the bolts through the shackles so the shackles can still move and added / torqued up the lock nuts.

All seems good for now. Right then next job........
