I have a '96 P38A DT manual and have noticed a slightly rattle-like noise when accelerating around the 1600rpm mark, not really noticeable in 5th. Poking about underneath I noticed that if a push on the front propshaft at the transfer box end there is a bit of play. The play is not in the propshaft itself but seems to be just inside the transfer box. Is this normal? Is there a bearing in the T box needing replacement? If so how difficult a job is this? Any special tools needed?

No it's not normal there should be no play whatsoever in output bearings. Fairly easy to change though.
