Hi,

Today I drove a few miles to pick up my wife and then the car won't start up. Then I found that the gear lever won't engage P or 1......

Battery don't seems to be weak but the RAC man plug in his battery checker and it show good battery. He then connect up the P38 to his truck and left it running for a few minutes. Puts it in Neutral and the P38 starts straight away.

He thinks the battery is too small for the P38 and alternator is not charging the battery. I had the P38 for a few months and do 700 miles without any problem. It feels like everything happening at once.

On the way home the temperature gauge drop all the way down to 0 or blue........on my drive I open the bonnet and found the temperature sensor came away from the engine and the green plastic all brittle etc. Push it back into the block and the temp is on the RED

not a good day, what could the problem be?

P or 1 is mechanical as far as the lever is concerned so check the cable is not rusted/binding or the XYZ switch loose.

Ok, I went under the car and have a play with the cable adjuster. I asked my wife to put it through the gear and this is what I found.

The cable need extra length for it to be in the Park position but if I extend its range then it is not enough to pull back to be in 1st.

I have also ordered the recommended 1000cca battery, I have a 70ah bosch battery and car try to turn over but won't start.

Cheers Datatek for the input, u practically live here

They are hard to get right and if the cable is binding in the sheath it will give you that problem.

Any solutions? do you think I need a new cable ?

I think you just need to keep fiddling with it. I've had this before in with my low range gears. It needs adjusting again now.

It can be a right bugger - I can get it right on High range or Low range but it's a reet bugger to get it right for both.

New battery in but it wont start :(

Although there is no error on dash I think I need to plug it in and have the code read :(

I thought it would show engine disable on dash?

I did try putting in the code via driver door and I am sure I didn't get it right as I don't see any confirmation light.

When I try to start the engine it turn for 1 sec then stop, battery seems good.
