Hi guys was having a chat with another p38 owner today and he said he needs to change his transfer box because of a worn chain/ remove it to replace the chain. He said it would have to go to a garage to be fixed is that true or could you do it yourself at home with a trolley jack? They don't look to hard to do.. And the garage will want big bucks? Your thoughts?

Could if you knew what you were doing. Transfer boxes are heavy and irregular in shape. A couple of extra hands would be pretty helpful.
 
Not hard at all Will, it's lining them up to put back in that is the troblem because ,as Wammers said, they are heavy and the shape does not make it easy to sit on a trolley jack. If you have an extra pair of hands, a jack with a large pad and block of wood to pack one side it is doable. I have done it on a Classic when the clutch went in France, on my own and without a jack so if you have the equipment and help it's not a bad job. If you had been nicer to me and were not always asking to be taken out for dinner, I would come and do it for you.:)
 
Alan, we've been through this I'm not that type of girl ;) I Thought it would of been harder than that. How long did it take you when you did it?

Last time, when the spring pins went, it was a good half days work. I was on my own and replaced the clutch whilst I had it stripped down.

Removed the gearbox on a Disco, stripped and rebuilt box and transfer box changed clutch all on my own. Was about 10 years ago though couldn't do it now. Bit easier on a Disco, you can put an engine crane in through the door and remove inner cover to lower the complete box and transfer box down and back up again. On the P38 everything has to be done from below, so bugger that for a game of marbles. Specially as i am now totally knackered. :D:D:D

You can remove the transmission tunnel cover on the P38 and get a crane in either via the window or the sunroof.:):) Lot of hassle though.

It really is not a bad job from underneath, I put my car on four ramps and it was just the right height for working on and removing the t/box on the jack. Should have taken photo's and done a write up, maybe next time:eek::)
 
I plan to support the box from the top with a block and tackle from a steel across the sun roof when I remove the engine and box from the scrapper, then I can lower it while I'm safely out of the way, then drag the complete engine and transmission out from the front with my digger :) :)

I made a fixing that bolts to the bottom of the gearbox and just slots into the hole of my trolley jack pad. Think the bolt holes are where it bolts to the chassis cross member but cannot quite recall at the moment. Can have a dig around in the shed for it and get the dimensions if you like?

I took the gearbox and transfer-box off as a single unit. It is quite heavy! Getting it lined up to get back in was a bit tricky.

I'm going to drop the whole lot including the engine on the deck and drag it out the front once I've cut the bodywork away:eek:
