Hi everyone,

I'm new to Land Rovers but have found a 4.6 P38 that seems sound with full service history and low mileage, a couple of questions though, any help would be greatly appreciated:

1: I went to look at the car today and was told that the EAS compressor had burnt out just this morning - the car was sat low on it's bump stops so I couldn't inspect the air bags - the compressor is supposed to be being replaced on Monday morning for me to test drive in evening. Does this sound plausible or the dealer trying to pull a fast one?

2: I've noticed on one of the pictures that a book symbol is on the climate control display which I'm guessing means that there's something wrong with the system and might mean a costly repair bill?

yes i can believe the compressor burnt out but ask your self why ? usually due to leaking air bags

the book symbol is the kiss of death for the hevac at worst new blend motors at best air con regassing

read up as much on here as you can and find the what to check guide for this motor

Thanks, well if the compressor gets changed and i'm able to drive it a decent distance without a problem then I guess that would be okay, the guide on how to change the air bags on here looks really helpful.

Thinking worst case scenario do you know how much getting new blend motors fitted will cost?

not sure how much they would cost to have changed but you need test book to set them up and thats main dealer only stuff so mega money, a new hevac unit is almost 500 quid on its own so if thats fecked its even more money

no taking it for a good ride wont tell you if there is a leak leaving it over night tells you if there is a leak as it drops front or rear depending which are leaking or both ends if bad enuf air bags aneed doing every 5 years or so according to some on here, where is this dealers then ?

if your not miles away and im free i mite only mite be able to come and look it over with you i wish i had some one with me who new about these motors when i got mine

it's near Guildford/Farnham

I'll have a look at the air bags and try and see what condition they're in

Sounds like the hevac stuff either needs to get sorted before I think about buying it, or calls for a large discount......

A failed compressor will almost certainly be due to a leak, ask to keep the faulty one, it may just need a new piston seal.

Book symbol could be many things, blend motors will be the most likely but could be sensors. It will not be lack of gas in the aircon as this is not fed back to the HEVAC, at least it is not on mine.

Lack of gas in the aircon does not produce the book symbol on the HEVAC, at least not on mine.

okay, so the leak might be happening before the air actually reaches the air bags? if that makes sense?

The Hevac light is quite worrying, I guess all I can do at the moment is mention it when I go back tomorrow and see what they say

Leak will most likely be airbags, but could be the diaphragm in the valve block or even an airline melted by a blowing exhaust.

Update, I can now say that I own a Range Rover. 1997 4.6 HSE with 82,000 miles and FSH.

Picked it up on Monday and drove down to Southampton. Air suspension seems to be working fine, went between low and normal when it should have done on the dual carriageway, hasn't dropped overnight either. The passenger door speaker only works some of the time but should be an easy fix.

The hevac seems to be working fine, blows hot and cold with no damp patch in the drivers footwell, however the outside temperature sensor seems to read between 5 and 8 degrees warmer than it actually is, would this be something that could cause the book symbol to come on?
