Similar to DoZZa's thread. Mine is a 4.0

Driving along, engine starts to rattle badly so pull over, steam from the engine bay so it's overheated (temp guage was reading normal).

Call out the AA, by the time he arrives, it starts and runs fine then blows steam out of BOTH exhausts and over heats again.

Seems like HG failure, what's the issue with liners and what am I looking for when I whip the heads off?

Access to my drive is awkward so I drove it the few yards on, and it ran fine.

linners need to be flet with the top of your block, if you not sure take some photos of them and put them up on herepeople will tell you if you have slipped linner. but remember the blocks are also a problem on the v8 cracking inside on the water ways.. good luck..

Years ago I had the same problem with both a 3.9 and later on, my 4.6 V8's.
Replaced the head gaskets without any joy on both.
Only fix was a new short engine.

The short engine looks absolutely brand new. Hoping that the liners are good.

There are absolutely no fluids leaking so I don't think it's cracked.

I'll strip it down on Saturday and let you know what I find.

Where's best to buy a gasket kit?.....loads on e-bay but I assume there are gasket kits and then there are gasket kits?
