my p38 dse manual is giving trouble going into 4th gear its like trying to pull the gearstick through a wall its not too bad cold but very bad when hot 3rd gear is also bad but not as bad as 4th i did notice metal filings in the gearbox oil about 6mts ago . the gearbox is a gearbox i got out of a scrap vehicle last year and has always had the problem. any advice would be welcome ...sean.

Put it back in the scrap vehicle:D
:hysterically_laughi.......but he has a point,....

I am no gearbox meister, but it sounds like the syncros have gone, or a bent shaft in there....

James Martin or Bemble are Gearbox guys I believe.

I don't know much about the manual boxes on p38, but have delt with issues on different makes and models.
Does the clutch operate as it should?
Have you checked the oil level?
Small flack in gearbox oil is not uncommon but if there's quite alot and the oil looks like sludge then I would be concerned.
The first thing I would do is drop the oil. Then go from there.
Gearboxes are very easy to over look at service times. A gearbox on a rangerover should be well serviced in my opinion.

could be a few things ,bearing between end of mainshaft and input shaft ,broken synchro spring/s.and wear in selector mechanism

i was thinking about rebuilding the box . bearings syncro rings etc. i have no idea how costly the parts would be or if it is a sucess

google ,stc1628 x1 ,ukc8l x1,rtc6751 x1,ftc248 x1 ,ftc317 x1, ftc3584 x 4,ftc5018 x2 ,ftc3371 x1 ,ftc2385 x1

the oil level is perfect i check all levels at every service and yes it does go slightly off colour.jamesmartin thanks for the codes i will google that soon . i forgot to mention that the gearbox is not very silent a very faint whine i replaced the atf with gearoil 80w90 it did help the whine and had no illeffects the box is not running hot

Slightly off topic: seanmull, you had a vibration problem back in September (18th-September-2011, 21:27 ) last year. Did you find a problem? Can you give an update?

Where's the clutch biting point? If it's near the bottom of the pedal travel then that's more likely to be the issue. A bottle of Lucas heavy duty oil stabiliser (not the dedicated transmission stuff) can work wonders with worn manuals. Made the transaxle on my Imp feel like silk!

Normally it would yes, but it's not impossible, especially if a past owner of the gearbox was one of those types who likes to rest his hand on the gear lever when trundling down motorways!

the viberation in september was a uj on one of the shafts which is ok now. update on the gearbox i changed the clutch friday as it was slipping with a while the disc was ok but the pressure plate was gone weak. i replaced pressure plate the clutch disc release bearing and pilot bearing. when the box was out i adjusted the 2 springs that automatically carry the gearstick to 3rd/4th position . the gearchange is a lot better but still giving some trouble going into 4th when hot and the oil was black again and burnt smelling . i priced the parts to rebuild the box and ashcroft would be about 200 pounds more expensive than doing it myself. for 200 pounds it might be as well get ashcroft box and do it right.
