Keeps blowing out of its sleeve by about 5 inches. Anyone know why ? Build up of pressure or just loose fitting end cap?

Checked oil level in the prescribed way - oil level a couple of inches above top level marker. Sucked/blowed down breather pipe which seems to be fine.

Thanks very much. Just siphoned some off and the oil looks black - time for a change I think.

No it smells of transmission fluid. Last changed 4 years/30 k miles ago.

Turns out to be down to a loose fitting dipstick cap - bent the plastic tabs in a bit so they grip the end of the tube - and no more popping out. Rarely do I find a simple and no cost solution to a problem on a p38.

Well yes. The only reliable thing about a p38 is the fact that something is about to go wrong.
