Hi all, my 1999 diesel P38 is refusing to start. There is plenty of fuel pumping through the filter and along the line to the high pressure pump, but if I remove a pipe from an injector there is just a small drop of fuel when the engine is cranking. The fuel cut off solenoid is clicking when the ignition key is turned. Any ideas please? A couple of leak off pipes were damp so I've changed them.

Is there a message on the dash? Engine Disabled maybe? Have you searched the forum archive? There are a few posts about this. If you were to add your location there might be a member near to you who could help.

Unfortunatley there is no message on the display and the engine check light isn't lit. There is a clicking noise coming from the high pressure fuel pump, but it's not cominig from the fuel stop solenoid which sounds like it's working ok. The pump is only about 4 years old and is a genuine Bosch pump. I've tried a brand new battery, 830 amp cranking power, and this has made no difference, it just cranks and makes no attempt to fire. I live in North East Wales. Many thanks.
 
These symptoms sounds like the same as my DSE was. The Becm code may be corrupt . Not sure if a re sync tool will sort this or if you need someone with the kit like doug.com to re write the code.
 
Thanks Dean68uk, I have a local autoelectrician with a 'Testbook' coming 'round tomorrow to take a look, I'll let you know if it detects anything.
 
That should sort it. You may want to change or check your alarm RF receiver afterwards for the newer type if the code is wrong.

it's because you are in wales.
 
A quick update....my local Land Rover trained autoelectrician has asked me to remove the ECU from behind the battery and let him test it. I'll let you know what the outcome is.
 
Did he not check the alarm becm code first via the OBD socket? Surely that should be the first thing to do before taking bits off?
 
Yeah, I suppose that makes more sense but he has a lot of work on at the moment and didn't have time to come out to where the RR is located. He's going to test it tonight, hoping he can rectify thr issue as I have a lot of trailer pulling to do next week!

Waste of time, if it's lost sync it will prove nothing and may even cause you more problems. All can be done just by plugging it into suitable diagnostics:)
 
A quick update, seems I had 2 problems. 1. The glowplug relay had loose connections that had to be re-soldered. 2. The ECU had gone into some sort of engine disable mode - possibly caused by the battery losing it's charge overnight. So all fine now, it'll be back to work pulling heavy trailers tomorrow! Thanks to all for advice and morale support.
