Hi all,
not familiar with auto boxes but over a couple of days reverse has been harder to drive the car than normal, it also seems to slip when in the higher forward gears . any advice? cheers phil

unfortunately i don't know, the problem has slowly got worse and reverse is only there with a lot of revs and up hill is a no no. forward gears seem ok but it does slip alot between the top gears. i am hoping oil and filter may cure this, or am i flogging a dead horse?? cheers phil.. ps 158000 miles had recon g/box about 120000

if it has slip then you are flogging a dead horse .oil change will help stuck valves ,one way clutches but these dont give slip ,just work or not or late changes ,slip will only occur when a clutch pack is worn

Well, just changed auto filter and oil, nothing has changed gearbox wise but strange thing is, handbook says it holds about 9 ltrs but i only got 3 ltrs out when draining. thought that may be the problem but only managed to get 5 ltrs in when filling before it started to run out of filler plug, this was with the engine running as described in w/shop manual. is this right or is somthing baddly wrong ? seems strange to be so far away from recomended capacity!!! cheers phil..
(in low box reverse does move the vehicle but still v. laboured.)

engine running box in neutral, you cant drain torque covertor so 5 litres refill is about right what was old oil like

oil was black and thicker than new, little sludge in sump and few particles in old strainer magnet had slime on it but no metal. cheers phil...

OK, finally come to terms with my loss, is there anywhere that can be recomended for buying a recon g/box - exchange unit or indeed any company in the cumbria/ lancs area that would supply and fit(there is a official l/r dealer 10 mls from me but think they will be a tad expensive.). lack of time and no pit or ramp would make it difficult for me but not impossible as i could find one.:(
thanks for all the advice- Phil....

Try Ashcroft transmissions, good reputation and can arrange same day fitting for about £1300 all in, or you can get an exchange unit from them to fit yourself:D

Depending on which side of Preston you're at, there's also Crook Brothers at Houghton. He's pretty good and has a P38 as his daily driver so he's well versed in all their foibles.

Yeah forgot about Crooks pretty decent by all accounts. Had a mate who used them.

cheers all,
I live in west cumbria and apart from official l/r dealers theres no indies that i'm aware of, so i think it will have to travel. i picked the preston area as that was the closest i could find on google, when looking for someone who worked on p38s and did recon g/boxes. So if anyone knows somewhere closer to cumbria please let me know. cheers phil

Phil have a look at YELL.com local business listings. There are auto transmission shops in your area.
