The display on my P38 is going bonkers at the moment, in the last two days the outside temp (according to my range rover) has been 1,0,-6,-9,7,11,15,0.
Is the likely problem the sensor, before I go out a get one.

Hope someone can help since fitting a new one looks like a right pain. With the sensor being hidden behind the front bumper somewhere, and I don't want to spend the day taking my car apart and then find out that I didn't need to.

Your lucky, mine is just in front of the widscreen below the pollen filter.
Try replacing that one.

probablt the fist thing to do is check the temp with an independant thermometer.

does it really matter if it works?

the way i tell the temp is to go outside and if i feel the need to go "brrrrrrrrr" its cold, if i feel the need to take my coat off its hot, anywhere in between i put the heated seats on and open the sunroof, all bases covered!!!!

Forgot to say that I copped out of fitting my sensor and the mechanic fitted it for me for less than £20 and a little labour.
Well woth it for me, although its not essential to have it really.

Local LR dealer said if its a 95 the I would need new sensor and possibly Hevac. (Loads a money)

Might be a dodgy sensor or connection to it, only way to find out is to get a look at it and go from there. Having the front bumper off is no big deal and pretty easy compared to most cars, 2 bolts to remove from under the bumperette pokey out things and then 2 clips to release either side of the bumper and it slides right off without a problem. Get it off and check the sensor.

It is important to have the sensor working as the HeVAC uses this to determine whether to activate the A/C, change the heater flap positions and a whole bunch of other stuff so it is an important part of the system.
