So early next year I will be getting a new chassis on my 200tdi Defender 90. I won't be doing it myself but a mechanic who does work for me for a good price will be doing it for me. (The building next door to him make landy chassis's)

While the chassis is being swapped however I figured it would be a good time to get other work done to it, but what?

I was thinking a new suspension kit to be put on it and a poly-bush set as well, it has had it's rear axle upgraded recently to an axle with disc brakes rather than the drum brakes, anything to do with the engine is something that will be on the list for next time (bigger intercooler, engine/turbo tuning, side exit exhaust)

may as well do crank seal and clutch while its all apart

Id start with new springs and shocks, All new bushes, brake pipes and flexi's, Clutch kit.
Plus what ever else you find when you strip it down. (There's bound to be a few bits )

I'd wait and see when the car is stripped down as the list could be endless,and if he finds unexpected faults which can raise the price. Unless funds are unlimited of course .

I have to agree with the Doc.

Really the most pan in the ass thing is the crank seal and clutch, You can do most other things with the engine in place.

Get a new chassis bolt set (think lr series do them quite cheaply). Suspension bush kit, spring seats, A frame ball joint and housing, brake pipe and fittings, copper grease for re assembly. Definately budget for clutch and crank seal, timing belt kit is worth doing as well while it's easy to get at, so may as well get front crank seals too. Maybe worth getting some engine paint to paint the block as well. Engine, gearbox and axle oils. Could go the whole hog and get wheel bearings as well, strip and refurb the axles while it's in bits too.
Just finished a similar job on my disco and that was pretty much everything I used/did (also fitted new discs and calipers at the same time)

Just got a galvanised chassis for mine and a new bulkhead, it's a 200tdi 110 so as I'm starting mine on Wednesday I'll let you no haha.
Unfortunately just had the engine out so I fitted entire seal kit including crank seals, timing belt kit, clutch and new fork ( make sure you replace the clutch fork and ball when changing the clutch) get a decent one too, not cheap aftermarket.
So on chassis swap I don't need to touch any of that, got an entire chassis bolt kit, new windscreen seal, wading kit, all new bushes, going to do all the diff/trans/gearbox oils, replacing the seat box and gearbox shrouds as they are rotten, replacing the brake lines and I'm sure other stuff will pop up, have a limited budget for anything unexpected as I've spent so much already but if it needs it I'll have it done.

Will ask him to check the clutch and crank seal then. Plus the timing belts. The engine is a disco engine and only has about 70,000 miles on it.

It was the mechanic's parents engine from their Disco so I am sure he will probably know when the clutch was last changed or if it has been. My master cylinder can leak slightly from time to time into the footwell so I guess that is something that could be changed.

Yeah, I want to build up a list to have these things checked over, if he feels they are worth changing then I can get them done when easier and cheaper to do so. The bushes and suspension are just upgrades that I want for improved comfort and better off roading ability.

I wish funds were unlimited, though I would probably just buy a new one if they were (Or at least a nice TD5 )

I saw a 200tdi in a local Preston garage here that just had 10k put into it. Repainted white, new chassis, suspension, full paint job. Looked gorgeous. Of course I would be too scared to take something like that down the beaten path! Or even park it up at a Tesco's!
