Given that Ive had P38's for a very long time, have experienced slipped liners, EAS meltdowns and just about every electrical problem known to man ....... and I still love them .......

Current is a 2.5 1998 hse that runs like a swiss watch - Its had constant care and attention, everything works apart from the EAS which is now coils ...... flew through an MOT last month with emissions that barely registered ....... probably worth between 1500 and 2000 quid ...............

Im looking on auto trader at 2004/2005 RR's 3.0 TD6's in the 12000 to 14000 mark .........

what do you think - do I continue enjoying my cheap P38 or would it be a smart move to move up ........

Im well aware that the day after I buy it, it will be worth nothing ........

Im thinking in terms of ....... is the TD6 really that much better than the old 2.5 ... was the EAS any better than the old P38 ...... is the fuel consumption any better ...... or worse ......

and finally, I got 700 quids worth of winter tyres on spare rims for the P38 - will they fit the newer model ...... ?

I know its one of those "luxury" problems - but the tax man just gave me some loot back and its a shame to see it just sit there waiting for the bank to go broke ................:)

Had similar thoughts about upgrading my p38 to an L322. from the research i have done, you would be best to keep the p38 until a later model TD6 with the upgraded gear box and the touch screen sat nav was in your price range

Good point ................

One thing Ive learned over the years, that the best place to get opinions and info is from other rangie owners .... this site is like gold dust ..... :)

Hi, not much help, but I just wanted to say, depending on the condition, 2.5 dse's are actually doing a lot better than you think on ebay, after buying mine I checked ebay a few days ago, I saw one on coils do roughly £3000, and one on air bags do £4200, both over 100,000 miles.

My friend had an 02 3.0 diesel l322 auto, and I have to say its tons better, comfier, nicer inside and out compared to my 2.5 p38., I couldnt help on fuel consumption as he had a very heavy right foot, but I can imagine it being better on the l322 as it has a stronger engine, and newer electronics to deal with the fuel delivery.

Only problems he ever came across was the neutral switch played up, and this was a very easy fix, bit of tape sorted it.

Go for it, I would love to move up from my p38, but its great work horse, and I could never justify using a l322 off road or for heavy towing.

Got my l322 td6 and I love it to bits !
Can't fault it so far - very good when towing our horse trailer and quite nippy when you need it

Also fitted an aftermarket sat nav touch screen which is tonnes better than the land rover unit

Go for it !
Alot different to a p38 !

if i were you id run yours in to the ground, maybe only spend "maintenence" on it,and see how long she lasts , then chop it in

OK, maybe this will help. I've run several L322's and one P38. The P38 was an OK vehicle but I never developed any kind of love affair with it.

So the L322. The TD6 is a decent strong motor but not exactly the most powerful. It's more pokey than the 2.5 in the P38 but then the L322 is a slightly heavier car. But, with a good remap the TD6 can be a stonking engine. 30MPG average is relatively easily achieved.

The post 2005 ones have the Ford based infotainment system with touch screen. These are much more desirable than cars with the BMW based stuff. The "In-betweenies" which had the interior update but no exterior update or Terrain response are about the best value.

Earlier cars are OK but you should avoid the low trim levels as they are nigh on impossible to shift on. Vogue or above only for these unless they're silly cheap.

But.......try looking for an early / high miles TDV8, 06 onwards. They're coming in cheaper now, sub 20 grand for an 06 Vogue with over 100k on it. They are probably the most desirable L322 and the engine is a pearler. The TDV8 is a larger variant of the TDV6 in Disco 3, another fine engine which is known to cover over 300k before major attention is required. One member on FFRR.com has a TDV8 with over 200k on it, Just avoid the HSE trim level as it has no sunroof, no Nav, no heated steering wheel, no heated rear seats, cheaper leather, basic audio etc. it really is a massive difference to the Vogue.

Note that neither the TD6 or TDV8 take kindly to veg oil etc. Just incase that's an issue to you.

Hope this helps a bit.

Just avoid the HSE trim level as it has no sunroof,

I can never understand why anyone would want a sunroof if the vehicle is fitted with Air-Con, considering that most sunroofs will leak at some time in their life, even more foolish is Air-Con in a convertable, but thats only in my opinion...

having a sunroof is more about letting more light into the cabin rather than ventilation. Especially with the darker interior colours.

Typically uninformed post, you should try sitting in a soft top with the roof up on a sunny day, the roof makes a very good heater and you need aircon if it is too cold to have the roof down at 60

in my opinion for what it is worth, keep with the p38 til it will go no more, the money you have raked up in the bank will buy you another quality 4x4 maybe not under the land rover brand, unfortunately range rover and land rover seem to be standing still and other marks are catching up in leaps and bounds, the only one worth going for soon will be a defender, just my opinion. i shall now wait and see now what others put.:pop2:

My td6 HSE has a sunroof !
It actully has every possible extra that the vogue has minus the crap sat nav !
Only use air con when on motorways otherwise sunroof and windows are down when we have good weather !

I still can't think of any other 4x4 that is as good looking as the range rover ! It's not the same to me when someone asks what car you drive and you say "I drive a KIA or Nissan " lmao !

So it has Venture Cam, Oxford leather, heated AND cooled front seats, heated rear seats, bluetooth, 20" alloys, bi-xenon headlamps as well then.

no venture cam (rubbish anyway) oxford leather ??? it has full piped leather

bluetooth handsfree, DVD, Digital freeview TV, Sat Nav, IPod connection etc.... all in the 8" touch screen stereo I fitted - 11 speaker amped system.

20" stormer alloys, and xenon headlights and LED side lights.

heated front and rear seats - not cooled ~(dont like air con seats anyway)

I was suprised when buying it that is had so many extras for a HSE - maybe when the original owner purchased it there where no vogues in stock so he bought a HSE with all the extras on top ?

either way it costed £2000 less than the same year vogue model at the time. so i think i done pretty well ;)

Airsprings £360 for L322 compared to £60 for P38, look for steering column adjustment problems, corroding trim, door handle mechanisms breaking, not to mention the weak auto box on early models plus the recall for the front prop, fuel economy much the same as the P38 with a bit more performance. Lots of electrical problems starting to appear, some due to water leaks into the rear quarter corroding the connectors. I'd keep the
P38, better the devil you know.
