Have just changed the oil on my Disco 300Tdi. Put in a fully synthetic Diesel oil (Fuchs Titan SynDiesel 10W 40).

My question is:- Could I keep this oil in for say 10,000 miles rather than the normal 6,000. I normally use the semi synthetic variant of this oil and the engine is showing very little sign of wear having only covered 90,000 or so miles since 1998. It takes a couple of weeks for the oil to go black so I assume everything is still tight. With modern oil technology being what is and good filtration will the fully synthetic last longer.

I am sure there are some oil experts out there, all views taken into account.

:5biamwithstupid::5biagree:And you checked your motor for wear how?? removed the head and looked for cylinder wear,removed cam shaft for bearing wear pulled main bearing for wear, removed connecting rod caps for wear and of course you used a micrometer to measure everything to check factory specs??

You're better off using a cheaper oil and changing it more regularly than using a good oil and not doing it half as often.

Mr Rat speaks the truth...

also it depends on the working life of the vehicle.

Long motorway runs or lots of short runs round the town.

I think our cars usually get serviced every six months so twice a year, usually only rack up around 6000 miles a year max but it means the engine is well cared for as is the rest of it

Thanks to all I also change things about twice a year as the total cost is only around £35.00 for oil, filter & fuel filter each time, even for the synthetic stuff. Like you Dr Evil mine is very similar spec, no cat etc and milage is around 8000. Motoring, mostly a few miles a day for dog walking occasional tugging a big twin axle caravan and occasional trips to the mIdlands. Very sorry that I can not come up to the almost surgical standards of Fur Trapper. He must spend so much time maintaining his vehicle it never gets as far as the road.

For the money you spend it's more than worth it knowing you're extending the life of your engine

It's one of the reasons I also regularly waxoyl and spray old sump oil onto the chassis too

How can you make a statement that my motor shows no wear at 90kmiles.
If you drive just a few miles a day then cut in half the time required for oil changes.
The worst thing is short trips on a motor, it never gets up to operating temp. A motor with majority miles on the motor ways will be in better shape than a city/short trip car with half the miles.

With a 300 tdi or other such diesel (not td5) running a full synthetic is pretty much a waste of money , as you cant extend your change intervals as its the build up of contaminants that limit the change intervals eg carbon so the oil thickens governed by how "dirty" the engine is , the reason i mention the td5 is it has a centrifugal oil filtratio unit , so it would probably counteract the oil thickening and suspending the carbon etc.
regular changes and turbo cool down observance will do more for your engine than full synth oil. Full syn oil in gearboxes diffs etc is a different matter tho ! JMHO

I agree with you Tacr2man, Only using fully synth as it was on special and ended up cheaper than my normal 50/50. Result!! Bless Opie Oils. Huge advantage for me, I live at the other end of town and they deliver my boiler juice as well.
