New to Landies, but looking for a TD5 90 defender.

I saw a very clean one today, 2004 with less than 70k on the clock.

I noticed some oil under the engine and further examination revealed that there was oil at the back of the head, so I'm guessing it's come from the rocker box cover and worked it's way down the drivers side of the block.

Could this be anything more serious than needing a new gasket?

With the sellers permission, I took the engine cover off and it looked pretty clear the oil was starting out at the rockerbox cover.

I have some photo's on my phone, it that helps.

Cheers.

A leak from the rocker cover is hardly terminal. There aren't many landies about that are totally oil tight.

Knock the price down then fix it. New cam cover gasket is about a tenner and it may also need a fuel pressure regulator gasket which is less than a fiver.

Worst case the fuel pressure regulator is leaking which will cost around a hundred quid.

Thanks for the prompt replies!

Some phone pics showing the leak. Quite a bad leak for a rocker box gasket, the oil was all over the back of the engine, right down to the bottom of the bell housing and gearbox. Some drips on the floor.

Someone had recently topped up the oil as there was a pool of clean oil around the filler.

My biggest worry was how much was lost during it's drive over from Ireland to the South of the UK....

Of course the dealer was happy to knock of a 100 quid, but there's a risk it lost a lot of oil enroute.

the engine sounded sweet as a nut, no smoke etc.

my 300 TDI disco has leaked like that for the last couple of years gearbox is covered and chassis but hardly any oil actually needed to keep it on the line on dipstick,a little looks a lot. Rocker cover gasket is only a couple of quid and easy fix I will get around to mine soon hardest bit will be cleaning all the crud off!

If the dealer will only knock £100 pound off the asking price get him to fix it. I'd want at least double that and some for my trouble.

make sure you check for oil in the wiring loom as well, I would expect a bit more than that off in case it is the regulator thats leaking as well.

I recommend a genuine gasket and a good hot steam glean with some degreaser sprayed on it first.
