Just bought a water damaged 2.5 DSE, Turbo was full of water and on closer inspection is also very oily inside, is this oil normal? there isn't any play in the shaft, but i feel it might had blown the seals or something, is there any way of testing this? If i need a replacement are the Omega/BMW ones the same?
thanks

I think you will find this is normal. Oil enters via the breather at the top of the engine where the big plastic molded bit is that says TURBO INTERCOOLED on it. If you look underneath this towards the left hand side just before it starts dropping towards the turbo then you will see the breather.

I recently had the pipes from the big pipe from the turbo to the intercooler off to allow easier access to the A/C compressor and the insides of them were covered in oil, it wasnt dripping out but there was oil in there so I would say its normal.

What happened to the RR you have then?? Did someone try and drive it through deep water??

Not sure i bought it as salvage. The fact its had water in the turbo for about a month, is this likely to have nackered it? as i say no play in the shaft and spins ok....

I'd try it out before buying another.
The engine is about as powerful a Bee's fart with the turbo, so without it you will notice the differance!, it's a 'low blow' unit so you will hear it spin up just as soon as you pull away in first gear, (wind the window down and listen for the high pitched whistle, feint but it should be there).
Oil in the innards is quite normal and as such it could have saved your from rusting up.

The turbo from the Omega is almost the same, the compressor exits at the 6 o'clock position compared to the RR's 12 o'clock, the housings can't be swapped as the wastegate actuator is mounted in a different position, you probably could use the Vaux turbo but it would require a fair bit of plumbing, could be done though if needed I reckon.

The exhaust manifolds are exactly the same.
