After changing the injector loom in my Td5 I finally got around to cleaning out the oil in the red ECU plug - after overcoming the hydraulic lock that stopped me from getting it off at the first attempt!

Crikey, what a lot there was too. Is this the usual amount found when doing this job, or does this seem excessive? Hard to believe this is all due to capillary action...

If the plug has never been touched before then that's not excessive IMO. Mine has less than that, but it has been cleaned out 2 or 3 times. Now I've got an MOT, new rocker cover gasket, new camshaft acccess plug I must get around to changing the loom.

Well I doubt it's been done before, so this is probably all 14 years worth.

The loom change itself is a doddle, but I found getting the cover back on with the new gasket to be a bit of a fiddle. The rear of the cover is very close to the bulkhead and has to go under the lip of an acoustic cover on the rear of the engine, so you have to tuck it under while keeping the 'lumpy' bit of the gasket at the back in place.

keep cleaning it from time to time untill all the oil leaves the wiring...and at that amount of oil check that grey plug near the fusebox and the middle plug in the back of the fusebox too cos the oil might have got there too and it affects good contacts

SF - yes, it was in the grey plug too, so I cleaned it out. Was this 'feature' rectified in the newer looms?

I replaced it with one listed as OEM from Rimmer Bros, which turned out to be 'All-makes4x4' branded.

A design fault I'm afraid. Injector looms need changing from time to time. The plug to keep an eye on for the earliest signs is the round one at the front right of the cyinder head.

As your connector one is that bad, I would check it every week for a couple of months after replacing the loom.

They did do a upgrade/recall on the connector seal. Has be mentioned here before and on other Land rover forums.

Hi Spong, that's not at all an unusual amount of oil on the connectors.

I use Brake and clutch fluid aerosol to get rid of the oil, the other stuff evaporates off. I also take the ECU out and stand it - sockets end on - on kitchen towel to soak up any oil that migrates into the ECU case.

After replacing the injector loom you'll probably need to clean the connectors 2 or 3 times as there will be residual oil in the engine loom working it's way through.

Cheers
Dave

on a further note...
when you have replaced the injector loom, don't just through it away.
give it a soak in petrol and a final rinse with metho and it will be as good as new. there really is nothing in the loom to fail... it's just wires and connectors!! :D ... saves having to buy another down the track :)

Biglad - I did just that, with kitchen towel under it. I borrowed a set of security bits from work so I could open the ECU up and clean out the rest - but the missus has been using it to tow the horse around most of the weekend so I haven't got around to that yet.

Rapserv - I thought the same, so it's hanging up in the garage window, in the sun, nice and warm with the hope that the oil will find its way out. Good idea about the petrol though, I suppose the thinner the liquid the more it will penetrate between the strands of wire. I'd need to replace the two 'O' rings but other than that there's nothing wrong with it.

I've used an old harness after cleaning it... without changing the 'o' rings and it's been fine. Still, it wouldn't do any harm replacing them if you have them. :)
