Hi all.

I know it's all bin done before, but at Hafords today it reccomends for best protction 5w/40's fully synth.

I'm sure i read on this site that 5w/30's was your best bet:confused:

The LR hand book is even more confusing.

So, for an upto date take on the situ with oil i thought i would ask the exprerts.. you lot ;)

Also while i'm on the subject.. can you get the three 'o' rings for the oil filter. As no oil filter iv'e looked at seems to have them.

I have done a search, but want upto date info, cheers

03 TD4 76,000 mls

Thanks all.

Hi Mulderke,

Yes, we need an up to date approach on most things as advancements / improvements are introduced all the time.

Lots of service components have changed since the Freelander was first introduced. I use fully synthetic lubricants for everything - except of course the auto-g/box.

Ideally we should choose an oil to suit the operating conditions. That's why the LR manual gives several alternatives.

In winter I'm using 5W-30 and in summer 10W-40 but I'm changing oil every 6 months irrespective of mileage. At the same time as the clocks go forward / back and I change my summer tyres to winter tyres.

It's only in extremes of climate that the oil viscosity in a 'family car' becomes really important - Norway in the winter would warrant 0W-30 and thrashing down to the south of Italy or Greece in the height of summer might well call for 10W-40 or even 20W-40.

In the UK, for general use you could use either of the specifications you quoted in your post - 5W-30 or 5W-40

Just like tyres there is no 'one size fits all.

Sorry to go on a bit - but you did ask.

'Sorry to go on a bit'

Not at all! just the reply i was looking for. As i'm going to spend a lot of this summer touring France i'm going to opt for the 5w/40 fully synth.

What do you think?

Cheers

It is confusing, I agree. I used to used 10w40 part synthetic, as per the book, but reading up a bit led me to believe that 5w30 fully synthetic was now the one to use in the UK. Anyway, a few weeks ago Halfrauds were selling all Magnatec at £17 per 4 litres, so I nabbed a couple of the 5w30 ones of the the right spec (bizzarely, the Vauxhall spec) and I did my annual oil change today. I was quite surprised at how thin the oil seemed when it went it, but it's a decent oil and seems to be the one now specified for the vehicle. Well, that's what my research led me to believe.

Anyway, it's driving fine; seems quiet and, well, normal! Watch this space.

Regarding oil filter O rings, the only one I've ever had that had the three of the correct size was a Genuine Parts one. All patent ones either have just the big one or all three, but ONLY the big one fits! The Britpart one I used today (yes, I know, I know...) fell into the latter category: three O rings present, but the two smaller ones were wrong so have gone in the plumbing spares box (again) :)

Hi,

5w-40 will be fine - remember to put a plastic bag and an old rag over the alternator before you change the filter.

Also I think Mahle filters (which are now the OE fit of BMW) come with all the rubber 'O' rings you need.

Enjoy the South of France.
