Hello,

Bit of a different question when it comes to oil filters on the Td4 Freelander 1s, as I don't really want the same hassle as last year.

Some owners say that the filter housing cap simply unscrews and lifts out with no dramas.

Unscrewing the filter is easy, but when it comes to lift it out of the engine bay, it simply will not clear the top part of the engine or a pipe. I have to remove the top section of the engine, which is no major job at all, but how come other owners do not have this trouble.

only have to flex that rubber hose a little bit .. to get the cap past it

I did try that to, it flexed but not enough, seems odd but its not a major issue.

It will flex ok just do not be frightened to pull a little harder, use a carton to drop the cap into once removed, also cover up the alternator, also clean out the pot

Thank for your pics, I will try again next time, maybe a bit more force is the answer.

Didn't know you had to clean the pot out, but guess that makes sense to do thinking about it, once cleaned out do you refill with fresh oil to prime it, or just let the engine do it on start up and then refill the oil.

I did try that to, it flexed but not enough, seems odd

just noticed .. that hose on yours looks different
to the one in Arctic2's pics .. and mine ( pic attached )
maybe that's why it's harder to flex to give space ..

once cleaned out do you refill with fresh oil to prime it, or just let the engine do it on start up and then refill the oil.

according to the 'Haynes' .. no need to refill the filter housing with fresh oil to prime it ..
a.f.a.i.k. the oil drains from it anyway when the engine is shut down ..
when the engine starts .. you can hear the oil filling it .. after an oil / filter change
'n also every time the engine starts ( when shut down for a period .. like overnight )
it's quite brief .. like one second or so ..

although if your concerned about it ..
can't see that 'priming' the oil filter housing would do any harm
( not tried it myself )
but .. Not a good idea to over fill the oil sump ..
as it will lead to more pressure inside the crankcase ..
( particularly at higher rpm )
in some engines .. over filling can cause the oil to become aerated ..
due to the crankshaft rotation whipping up the oil ..
and lubrication suffers as a result ..

just make sure .. when changing the filter ..
to cover the alternator with a plastic bag .. or rag ..
so as oil don't get splashed onto the alternator 'n go inside it's internals ..

your pipes are the earlier ones it has always been a pain to get the cap and filter out but yours does look a bit tighter than usual is it possible you could fit a bit longer hose so you can pull it out of the way. And as said cover the alternator or you will be wanting a new one.

Thanks guys, yeah used an old pillow case last time I did this to protect the alternator, which worked a treat.
Look fun and games will be on going for me then.
Ours is a 2003 Td4 Auto on a 52 plate pre facelift model.
