Not saying it's good, just saying they does it.

From an engineering point of view, it would be betterer for them to drain the oil. That way the oil will flow out using gravity and take with it all it can. One would assume it would flush out any metal particles in the oil. Sucking out the oil wouldn't have the same effect, as the sucker may not get to the bottom of the sump. Also after draining mine I fit the plug loose, then remove again after 20 minutes. Half a drinks can of oil flows out. The bit of oil thats dropped to the sump after the initial drain. Removing the oil that way must be betterer as it removes and flushes out old oil, I assume.

Assuming my metal particles are not sucked out hopefully they will not cause harm ending up trapped in the filter.

I cut one of my filters open. Strong little things. Didn't find anything in it which surprised me. Had only bin used for 6k miles though. Is that normal or lucky?

Now the old school way of doing it gets every last drop out sump and hopefully you see any tell tail signs in oil.

Depending on the design of the vehicle and the head and oil cooler designs, you can end up with an amount of unchanged oil.

Personally unless it is like an oil fiesta with lumps of crud in rocker box- anything else has little gunk in it generally.

Not like the days of the CVH engine blocking pickups and dying because of cheap oil that couldn't handle the temperatures

anyone willing to try one of these pumps to remove the oil,then afterwards remove there drain plug and see if or how much oil comes out? tim

angle of car and shape of sump will affect it, also how tube is inserted.

I checked the answer to this on other newsgroups before purchasing my extractor.
I then bought mine.

Ok then, thanks again for all the input...having read thru a few threads on different forums and seeing autoexpress's review om these I've plumped for the 6 litre laser one (it won the autoexpress test) as i said earlier I will only be using for interim oil changes and will still do a yearly sump plug overnight drain as usual.

When I do the first one I'll take some pics and measurements a post it all on a new thread
