Ok so head is off and I've started the clean up operation! Head gasket didn't have any obvious signs of damage, but it did get torn as the head came away from the block.

I don't really know what I'm looking for, but in my mind there are no real obvious faults? Some of the ports have raised bits around the edges and some appear partially blocked.

As the head was put on the workbench there was a rattle and a component fell onto the floor... Anyone recognise what it is?

Good! Bet that was easier than taking that turbo apart!
Check the head very carefully between the valves for cracking, I cant quite be sure on the pic. Did you check the piston crowns carefully for cracks? Usually through the deep v shaped groove on the piston tops. And condition of bores?
Not sure what the thing is, I may remember later, or someone else may.

All looks ok so far but the light started to go before i could get it all properly clean. Will delve deeper over the weekend. A couple of small washers also appeared on the work bench as I started cleaning it all up.

Probably injector washers, you will need eight new ones anyway when you replace the injectors.

Looks like you are missing a valve cap there.
Try and post some pics of the top of the block and pistons when it is light.

Is that bit possibly one of the exhaust manifold clamp widgets? looks like its the top one between cylinders 1 and 2 going on your earlier pics.

Get the head face and block face really clean, take a good sharp photo of each, post them here and ask James Martin to have a look - he has the eyes of a sharp eyed eagle for these things.

Yes, pics need to be in really good focus, and oils and carbon removed.
I cant tell for sure if there are cracks between the valves, pic aint quite clear enough!

Burnt right through the piston crown, by the look of it. Faulty injector at a guess.

Sump off, remove big end cap, piston out and replace, IIRC. While since I have done it, James will have chapter and verse.

If the engine is very high mileage and worn, might be worth googling around, see if you can find another. Might even be one for sale on the forum!
