Not had this particular freelander long and am slowly working my way through the usual suspects to get it right.
Just done an oil and filter change and to my horror I've drained about 9 litres of oil out of it!!!

Can't believe three were no obvious symptoms of having that much oil in it...

New filter in and about 6 litres have got it to the right mark on the dipstick

you obviously dont check level regulary then ,engines will take some extra oil as long as theres still enough space between crank and oil

I do check regularly. Checked it when I viewed the car and all seemed well. The oils seemed pretty clean too so I have been concentrating on other things

Chris

How did you measure what came out? Daft question I know, but I use a 2 gallon plastic bowl and have seen very little over half full from anything so I remain content. The exception being a citroen c5 that nearly filled the bowl, the extra being to cover the rattling big ends/main bearings!

All I can think of is that the previous owner added more oil between me viewing it and picking it up.

Thinking about it he did say he had topped up the oil cos he had lost some oil from running the car without the engine cover on and not putting the lhs screw in

Well the oil level is right now so will have to see how it goes

quite probably the answer , im a big fan of regular oil changes including gear box ird and rear diff

Me too........ Already done the diff, ird and gearbox....... Luckily they all had the right amount of oil in them!!!!!

a little over flow will do no harm......... even a extra 1/2 quart of oil . The level of oil in a motor is the minimum amount to do the job determined by the manfacture.

Too much oil will feck your engine big time ...

Thanks for the reassurance chaps........ Might be psychological but the engine seems to rev more freely now........ Or maybe that's just the nice clean oil!!!

The minimum and maximum are both marked and are both important. Most engines I've had there is approx 1 litre between them

Well what came out filled a five litre empty oil container the almost filled a 4 litre one

The oil that came out - it doesn't smell of diesel by any chance?

Keep a careful check on your level, watch out for it rising.

Is it a TD4?
Was the oil thin? It could be a leaking injector! Keep an on the level from now on, an increase would indicate an injector ;)

Yes it's a td4

No obvious smell of diesel and not overly thin. Will keep an eye on level over next few days / weeks
