hi everyone
just bought on 02 range rover 4.4 v8 had it 2 days and the top end rattles and knocks when first started ,hot or cold ( sounds like timing chain and tappets) just wondering if there are any common faults ? quietens down after 10 seconds or so .gutted wasnt doing it when i bought it
thanks for any info russ

have you checked to see if the oil level is low sometimes theyll rattle their balls off till the oil gets to the top of the engine and pressure up if its low

sounds like lifters may be worn out and letting oil drain down , so has to re prime its self every time , how long does it take before oil presure is up ?
i would try a oil change with OE filter and good oil , you can also get hydraulic lifter additive that may help

takes up to ten seconds to prime up and go quiet, worried incase it jumps the timing chain if it has hydraulick tentioner cheers russ

i had the same thing with a slitty 2.5td it only did it when it needed a drink of the golden sump charmer ( oil getting low )

I had this with my american van 5.2 v8 i put some flushing fluid in the oil ran it for a while then did an oil and filter change which sorted it so u could try that first, sometimes the hydraulic lifters get a bit bunged up lol
